Stora Enso Advances Low-Emission Construction Logistics With Electric Sylva CLT Deliveries

(IN BRIEF) Stora Enso and ByggPartner have begun fully electric truck deliveries of Sylva cross-laminated timber elements for a new three-storey headquarters in Borlänge, Sweden. The project is described as Stora Enso’s first global initiative using exclusively electric transport for CLT deliveries from its Gruvön production site to a construction site. The company estimates that the electric transport reduces CO₂ emissions by around 85% compared with diesel trucks. The timber-based building is scheduled to open in spring 2027 and is intended to demonstrate how regional supply chains, mass timber, prefabrication and lower-emission logistics can support more resource-efficient construction.

(PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, 30-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Stora Enso and Swedish construction group ByggPartner are collaborating on a timber-based office project in Borlänge, Sweden, combining mass-timber construction with fully electric truck deliveries of cross-laminated timber elements.

The project marks what Stora Enso describes as its first global use of exclusively electric transport for deliveries of Sylva cross-laminated timber, or CLT, elements. The materials are being transported by electric truck from Stora Enso’s Gruvön mill directly to the construction site in Borlänge.

According to Stora Enso, the use of electric trucks reduces CO₂ emissions by approximately 85% compared with diesel-powered transport. The logistics model is intended to show how emissions reductions can be achieved across the construction value chain, from raw-material sourcing and manufacturing to delivery and site assembly.

ByggPartner is constructing a new three-storey headquarters building designed as a largely timber-based workplace. The development has been planned with an emphasis on regional sourcing, shorter supply chains and local construction expertise.

The timber used for the project is sourced from forestry operations near Stora Enso’s CLT production facility in Gruvön. Further processing is also carried out in the region, while assembly is being undertaken by companies with experience in timber construction.

Stora Enso is supplying around 400 cubic metres of mass-timber elements for the building, with installation work already under way. The headquarters is expected to open in spring 2027.

The electric vehicle used for the deliveries is operated by LBC Frakt and forms part of the TREE research and innovation project, short for Transition to Efficient, Electrified Forestry Transport.

TREE is coordinated by the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden and brings together forestry-industry participants, researchers and subcontractors working on technical solutions and charging infrastructure for electrified transport. The project runs from 2024 to 2026.

The Borlänge project also aims to highlight the potential climate benefits of wood-based construction. Timber can store carbon during a building’s life cycle and may reduce reliance on more fossil-intensive materials, including steel and concrete.

The use of prefabricated mass-timber elements is expected to support faster and more precise installation while helping reduce construction waste. Stora Enso said that optimised design and selective replacement of steel components with timber alternatives can also improve resource efficiency.

By integrating mass timber, regional sourcing, prefabrication and electric transport, Stora Enso and ByggPartner are seeking to demonstrate a construction approach designed to lower emissions while supporting efficient project delivery.
