STMicroelectronics Introduces Compact High-Side Switches for Enhanced Reliability in Industrial Applications

(IN BRIEF) STMicroelectronics has introduced the IPS8160HQ and IPS8160HQ-1 high-side switches, featuring eight channels and built-in protection and diagnostics capabilities. These switches are designed to save space and enhance reliability in applications such as PLC modules for driving heavy loads and unidirectional motors in vending machines. They are also suitable for I/O peripherals in factory automation equipment and CNC machines. The switches offer low on-resistance and include features like overload and junction over-temperature protection, overvoltage protection, undervoltage lock-out, short-circuit protection, and more. The IPS8160HQ and IPS8160HQ-1 are currently in production and available in a compact QFN48L package.

(PRESS RELEASE) GENEVA, 1-Jun-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — STMicroelectronics N.V. (EPA: STMPA, NYSE: STM), a global high-tech company creating semiconductor technologies for a smarter, greener, and more sustainable future, unveils the IPS8160HQ and IPS8160HQ-1 high-side switches, delivering eight channels in a compact QFN48L package along with integrated protection and diagnostics features.

These advanced switches offer a unique combination of capabilities, enabling space-saving and enhanced reliability in various applications such as PLC modules for driving heavy loads and unidirectional motors in vending machines. They are also suitable for I/O peripherals in factory automation equipment, CNC machines, and general control of resistive, capacitive, and inductive loads with one side connected to ground. With a low on-resistance (RDS(on)) of 160mOhm (typ.at 25ºC), power dissipation is significantly reduced.

Each channel of the IPS8160HQ and IPS8160HQ-1 is equipped with overload (OVL) and junction over-temperature (OVT) protection, ensuring the circuits are safeguarded against damage and temporary faults. In the event of an overload, the affected channels turn off and automatically restart, effectively maintaining safe operating temperatures. Non-overloaded channels continue to function without disruption. Additionally, the switches feature immediate turn-off in case of ground disconnection, overvoltage protection, undervoltage lock-out (UVLO), short-circuit protection, output-current limitation, and an over-temperature fault indicator.

The IPS8160HQ is preset with a current limit of 0.7A, while the IPS8160HQ-1 offers a current limit of 1A. Both switches operate within a voltage range of 10.5V to 36V, making them compatible with international standards for industrial equipment. These standards include IEC 61131-2 for process controllers and IEC 61000 specifications for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electrostatic discharge (ESD) immunity, electrical fast-transient (EFT/burst) immunity, and surge immunity.

To facilitate easy evaluation of the driving and diagnostic capabilities of the IPS8160HQ and IPS8160HQ-1, STMicroelectronics offers the X-NUCLEO-OUT9A1 and X-NUCLEO-OUT19A1 digital output expansion cards. These expansion cards can be connected to STM32 Nucleo boards and enable seamless connectivity to 1A industrial loads.

The IPS8160HQ and IPS8160HQ-1 are currently in production and are housed in an 8mm x 6mm x 0.9mm-pitch QFN48L package. Pricing starts at $4.02 for orders of 1000 pieces.
