STMicroelectronics and Ampere Partner to Deliver Advanced Silicon Carbide Power Modules for Next-Generation EVs

STMicroelectronics and Ampere Partner to Deliver Advanced Silicon Carbide Power Modules for Next-Generation EVs

(IN BRIEF) STMicroelectronics and Ampere, Renault Group’s EV division, have entered a multi-year agreement to supply Silicon Carbide (SiC) power modules for Ampere’s next-generation electric powertrains starting in 2026. This partnership focuses on developing an advanced powerbox to enhance EV performance, battery range, and charging speed. Designed for 400V and 800V systems, the technology supports rapid charging and greater efficiency. The collaboration aligns with Ampere’s strategy to control the EV value chain and reinforces the companies’ shared commitment to sustainable mobility and reducing carbon emissions.

(PRESS RELEASE) BOULOGNE-BILLANCOURT/GENEVA, 4-Dec-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductor technology, and Ampere, Renault Group’s electric vehicle (EV) division, have announced a multi-year agreement to supply Silicon Carbide (SiC) power modules for Ampere’s ultra-efficient electric powertrains starting in 2026. This collaboration focuses on developing a cutting-edge powerbox for Ampere’s new generation of electric motors, optimizing performance, energy efficiency, and charging capabilities.

Advancing Powertrain Efficiency

The partnership leverages STMicroelectronics’ expertise in advanced power electronics and Ampere’s deep knowledge of EV technology. Together, they have optimized SiC power modules—crucial components that convert and manage electrical power from the battery to the motor. These modules enhance battery range, energy regeneration, and overall powertrain efficiency, while also contributing to smoother, more responsive driving experiences.

Innovation in Powerbox Technology

The jointly developed powerbox integrates SiC-based power modules with an advanced cooling baseplate for improved thermal management. Designed for both 400V and 800V battery systems, it delivers a superior performance-to-size ratio. The 800V system, particularly for Segment C-EVs, supports rapid charging, achieving 10%-80% battery capacity in under 15 minutes, aligning with the industry’s push toward faster charging and greater driving autonomy.

Strategic Alignment for Electrification

This partnership underscores Ampere’s strategy to control the entire EV value chain by collaborating upstream with key partners. Philippe Brunet, Senior Vice President of Powertrain & EV Engineering at Ampere, noted, “By working closely with STMicroelectronics, we’ve secured key components and optimized our electric powertrains to deliver high-performance EVs with extended range and reduced charging time, supporting our vision for sustainable mobility.”

Michael Anfang, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing at STMicroelectronics, highlighted the shared mission for greener mobility. “Our collaboration with Ampere exemplifies how advanced power electronics can elevate EV performance while supporting decarbonization goals across the mobility industry,” he said. “With our vertically integrated Silicon Carbide supply chain, we’re positioned to meet Ampere’s evolving requirements for electrified platforms.”

Commitment to Sustainable Innovation

This agreement reinforces the companies’ mutual commitment to reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable mobility. By combining their expertise, STMicroelectronics and Ampere are setting new benchmarks in powertrain efficiency and enabling the next wave of innovation in electric vehicles.

The collaboration demonstrates STMicroelectronics’ leadership in Silicon Carbide technology and its capability to deliver system-level solutions tailored to the evolving needs of the electrification industry.
