(PRESS RELEASE) BUSSNANG, 17-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Stadler Signalling AG has signed a key partnership agreement with Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn (SZU) to modernize SZU’s signalling systems as part of the railway’s broader modernization initiative, SZU_4.0. Announced on 16 October 2024, this partnership marks Stadler’s first venture into the Swiss standard-gauge signalling market. Under the agreement, Stadler will provide advanced signal boxes and train control systems to enhance punctuality, comfort, and travel times for SZU passengers. This significant project is part of an 800 million franc investment from the Swiss federal government, the canton of Zurich, and SZU to upgrade the railway’s infrastructure and services over the coming years.

The modernization will include the implementation of a 7.5-minute service during peak hours on the S4 and S10 lines, ensuring smoother and safer rail operations. Stadler will handle all aspects of the project, from planning and installation to testing and commissioning, with the entire contract valued at around 34 million francs over a ten-year period. Andrea Felix, Chairwoman of the SZU Board of Directors, underscored the importance of this project for the overall success of SZU_4.0.

For Stadler, securing this contract is a significant milestone, signaling its expansion into Switzerland’s standard-gauge railway market. The project will deploy Stadler’s Eurolocking signal box technology, certified with SIL4 safety standards, which has already seen success with various European rail operators. Peter Spuhler, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Stadler, emphasized the strategic importance of this contract and expressed confidence in the partnership with SZU.

In addition to the signalling system contract, Stadler and SZU recently signed an agreement for the delivery of 17 FLIRT-type S-Bahn trains, marking the largest vehicle procurement in SZU’s history. The new trains, valued at 160 million francs, will replace aging rolling stock and are expected to be in service by 2028.
