Smurfit Kappa Advances Sustainability Efforts with ANDRITZ Debarking Line Order for Colombian Paper Mill

(IN BRIEF) Smurfit Kappa, a leading provider of paper-based packaging, has ordered an energy-efficient debarking line from ANDRITZ for its paper mill in Yumbo, Colombia. The new installation, which is scheduled to start up in the fourth quarter of 2024, will process organic waste from Smurfit Kappa’s own forestry plantations and wood treatment plant, among other materials. The project is part of the company’s effort to replace fossil fuels with cleaner energy sources and achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The scope of supply includes a debarking line with a rubber tire-supported debarking drum, chip screening equipment, and a bark handling system with the ANDRITZ BioCrusher BSX.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 24-Feb-2023 — /EuropaWire/ —  ANDRITZ (VIE: ANDR), an international technology group based in Austria, announces that it has secured a contract from Smurfit Kappa to provide an energy-efficient debarking line for its paper mill in Yumbo, Colombia. The new installation is part of Smurfit Kappa’s efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources by replacing fossil fuels with organic waste. The debarking line, which is scheduled to start up in Q4 2024, will process pine and eucalyptus bark from Smurfit Kappa’s own forestry plantations and other materials from its wood treatment plant.

The contract, which covers Engineering, Procurement, and Supervision, includes a debarking line with a rubber tire-supported debarking drum, designed to achieve superior debarking results while minimizing wood loss. The line will have a capacity of 333 m3/hour for hardwood and 370 m3/hour for softwood solid-over-bark. The scope of supply also encompasses chip screening equipment and a bark handling system with the ANDRITZ BioCrusher BSX.

The project is another step towards Smurfit Kappa’s goal of achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Smurfit Kappa is a major provider of paper-based packaging worldwide, with a presence in 23 European countries and 13 countries in the Americas.
