Skanska to design and build new bridge connecting Newburg, Maryland, and Dahlgren, Virginia, USA

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 11-Feb-2020 — /EuropaWire/ — Skanska will design and build the new Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas “Mac” Middleton Bridge over the Potomac River, USA. The contract was signed with Maryland Department of Transportation – Maryland Transportation Authority as part of a joint venture with Corman Kokosing Construction Company and McLean Contracting Company. Skanska’s part of the project is worth more than 275 million euros (about SEK 2.9 billion), which will be recorded in the US order bookings for the first quarter 2020.

A new 3 kilometers, four-lane structure will take the place of the existing, two-lane continuous truss bridge that spans the Potomac River between Newburg in Charles County, Maryland and Dahlgren in King George County, Virginia. Roadway realignment and construction of about 800 meters on either side of the bridge is included in the project. An All-Electronic Tolling (AET) system will also be installed on the bridge.

The existing bridge will be demolished and used to create artificial reefs in the Chesapeake Bay watershed once the new bridge and roadway construction is complete.

The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2024. The new bridge is expected to open by 2023, with the construction beginning on March 2020.
