Skanska and Stockholm Exergi Join Forces to Build Pioneering Carbon Capture Facility in Stockholm

(IN BRIEF) Skanska has signed a SEK 990 million contract with Stockholm Exergi to undertake Phase 2 of the Beccs Stockholm facility project, which includes building the foundations and constructing a quay. The facility, situated in Energihamnen in Värtan near the sustainable energy plant Värtaverket, is designed to capture and permanently store approximately 800,000 tons of CO₂ per year from biomass flue gases. Work on the project will commence immediately with completion planned for 2028. This development, using Bio-CCS technology to store biogenic carbon dioxide in bedrock, supports Stockholm’s goal of becoming a climate-positive city by 2030, with financial backing from the EU’s innovation fund, state aid, and private investments in negative emissions certificates.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 3-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Skanska has secured a contract with Stockholm Exergi to construct the foundations and a quay for the forthcoming Beccs Stockholm facility—one of the world’s largest installations for capturing and permanently storing biogenic carbon dioxide—in Stockholm, Sweden. The contract, valued at approximately SEK 990 million, will be recorded as part of Skanska Sweden’s order bookings for Q2 2025.

This new agreement for Phase 2 builds on the existing collaboration for Phase 1 and covers the foundation, ground, and concrete work required for the Beccs building, along with the development of a new quay facility. Located in Energihamnen in Värtan, the Beccs Stockholm facility will complement the nearby Värtaverket, which already generates sustainable heat and electricity from forest and sawmill residues. The new facility is designed to capture and store around 800,000 tons of CO₂ annually from the flue gases produced by Värtaverket’s biomass power plant.

Construction on the Beccs facility is set to begin immediately, with completion targeted for 2028. The project employs Bio-CCS (Bio Energy Carbon Capture and Storage) technology, which intercepts biogenic CO₂ before it enters the atmosphere and securely stores it in bedrock. This initiative plays a crucial role in the City of Stockholm’s ambition to become a climate-positive area by 2030 and is being made possible through a mix of funding from the EU’s innovation fund, state aid, and the purchase of negative emissions certificates by companies with strong climate commitments.
