Siemens SENTRON 3QD2 Circuit Breaker Gains Silicon Carbide Technology from Infineon for Faster Power Protection

Under the partnership, Infineon will supply silicon carbide power modules for Siemens’ SENTRON 3QD2 semiconductor circuit breakers, helping improve efficiency, power density and reliability in power-critical environments. Semiconductor circuit breakers use electronic components and smart protection algorithms to interrupt current during faults such as short circuits or overloads, operating in the microsecond range and up to 1,000 times faster than conventional electromechanical circuit breakers. This fast response is especially important for direct current grids, AI data centers, factories and battery systems, where electrical failures can cause downtime, data loss or hardware damage. By integrating Infineon’s 62 mm CoolSiC™ MOSFET module 1200 V into Siemens’ protection concepts, the companies aim to support more resilient, efficient and future-ready power infrastructure while helping industrial and infrastructure operators adopt direct current systems, reduce energy consumption and advance decarbonization. As part of the partnership, Infineon will supply silicon carbide power modules for Siemens’ SENTRON 3QD2 semiconductor circuit breakers, supporting higher efficiency, greater power density and improved reliability.

The collaboration brings together Infineon’s expertise in silicon carbide semiconductor technology and Siemens’ capabilities in power distribution and infrastructure protection. The companies aim to address the growing need for fast, reliable and energy-efficient electrical protection as data centers, factories and industrial infrastructure become increasingly electrified and complex.

Semiconductor circuit breakers, also known as solid-state circuit breakers, are electronic protection devices that interrupt current flow in the event of faults such as short circuits or overloads. Unlike traditional electromechanical circuit breakers, which use mechanical components and typically operate on a millisecond timescale, Siemens’ SENTRON 3QD2 uses semiconductor components and intelligent protection algorithms to interrupt current in the microsecond range. This makes the system up to 1,000 times faster than conventional circuit breaker technologies.

The ultra-fast response is particularly important for direct current grids and other high-performance electrical systems, where even a brief delay during a fault can lead to costly downtime, data loss or damage to expensive hardware. In applications such as AI data centers, industrial manufacturing sites and battery storage facilities, faster protection can support greater system availability and operational continuity.

Infineon’s 62 mm CoolSiC™ MOSFET module 1200 V will be integrated into Siemens’ advanced protection concepts. The use of silicon carbide technology is intended to enhance the efficiency and performance of the SENTRON 3QD2 semiconductor circuit breaker while supporting the development of more resilient and future-ready power infrastructure.

Siemens said its direct current portfolio is designed to improve energy efficiency and enable the development of more robust infrastructure for industrial and infrastructure applications. Direct current systems can help reduce energy consumption and material use, while the integration of batteries can significantly reduce peak power requirements.

By combining Infineon’s silicon carbide modules with Siemens’ semiconductor circuit breaker platform, the two companies aim to support operators of data centers, factories and battery storage systems as they modernize power distribution infrastructure and work toward higher efficiency, resilience and decarbonization.
