Siemens Mobility Unveils Full-Scale Mockup for Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Project, Showcasing Future Public Transport Innovation

(IN BRIEF) Siemens Mobility, in partnership with Parklife Metro, has revealed a full-scale mockup of a train carriage for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project, offering a preview of the future metro system. The mockup highlights the spacious, accessible, and comfortable interior, featuring flexible seating, enhanced safety measures, and design elements reflecting local Aboriginal culture. The project, valued at 900 million euros, will introduce 12 fully automated trains and extensive digital infrastructure. This marks the first public-private partnership of its kind in Australia, contributing to significant economic growth and innovation in public transport.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 31-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens Mobility, in collaboration with its Parklife Metro consortium partners, has unveiled a realistic full-scale mockup of a train carriage for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project. This milestone in the turnkey project offers a sneak peek into the future of public transport in Greater Western Sydney, with the mockup providing a tangible preview of the experience passengers can expect when the new metro system is operational.

Léon Soulier, CEO of Siemens Mobility’s Turnkey Business Unit, expressed excitement over the mockup’s arrival in Australia: “This full-scale prototype marks an important step forward for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project. Spanning 23 kilometers from St. Mary’s to the new airport and Bradfield City Center, this project is not only a vital transportation link but will also support 14,000 jobs during construction, driving significant economic growth in New South Wales and across Australia.”

The life-sized mockup showcases the metro train’s interior, designed to offer a comfortable, efficient, and accessible travel experience. With expansive windows offering views of the Western Sydney landscape, the trains will feature flexible seating, standing areas, and enhanced handrails to ensure passenger safety. The spacious design also includes ample multifunctional areas for wheelchairs and wide double doors for quick and easy boarding and alighting.

The mockup serves as a crucial tool for evaluating and finalizing key aspects of the train’s design, including lighting, emergency features, and passenger information systems. Engineers and designers used the prototype to validate the interior layout, materials, and ergonomics before moving forward with manufacturing the actual trains.

As part of the mockup presentation, Siemens revealed the unique upholstery design, which incorporates artwork that celebrates the Cumberland Plain, where the metro line will operate. The designs represent elements of local Aboriginal culture, with the seats featuring patterns that reflect the night sky and the day-time landscapes of meeting places and waterholes adorned with wattle flowers.

Awarded in 2022, Siemens Mobility’s turnkey contract is the first of its kind in Australia, marking a significant public-private partnership. The project will establish a 23-kilometer metro line connecting the Western Sydney International Airport to Bradfield City Center. Siemens Mobility is responsible for delivering 12 fully automated, driverless trains, along with the digital rail infrastructure, including signaling, electrification, telecommunications, platform screen doors, and a depot. The project will also see the implementation of Railigent X, Siemens Mobility’s digital services suite, to enhance operational reliability. Siemens Mobility’s portion of the contract is valued at 900 million euros.
