Siemens Mobility to Equip São Paulo Line 4-Yellow Extension With Advanced Signalling Technology

(IN BRIEF) Siemens Mobility has been selected by Motiva to provide signalling and automation technology for the extension of São Paulo’s Line 4-Yellow, Latin America’s first fully automated driverless metro line. The project will add 3.3 kilometres of double-track tunnels and two new stations, extending the line from Estação Vila Sônia-Profª Elisabeth Tenreiro to Taboão da Serra. It will take Line 4-Yellow beyond São Paulo city limits for the first time and is expected to benefit more than 280,000 residents. The extension is projected to serve around 110,000 passengers daily, with an estimated journey time of 26 minutes between Estação da Luz and Taboão da Serra. Siemens Mobility will provide CBTC technology, Trainguard MT, electronic interlocking, telecommunications, operational supervision and GoA4 automation.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 15-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens Mobility has been selected by Motiva to provide advanced signalling technology for the extension of São Paulo’s Line 4-Yellow, Latin America’s first fully automated and driverless metro line.

The project will extend the line beyond São Paulo city limits for the first time, improving connectivity for more than 280,000 residents in the Taboão da Serra region and supporting the city’s wider urban mobility decarbonisation efforts.

The Line 4-Yellow extension will add 3.3 kilometres of double-track tunnels, linking the current terminus at Estação Vila Sônia-Profª Elisabeth Tenreiro with a new terminus at Taboão da Serra.

Once completed, the journey between Estação da Luz and Taboão da Serra is expected to take around 26 minutes. The extension is projected to serve approximately 110,000 passengers per day, improving access, operational efficiency and sustainable mobility across the metropolitan area.

Siemens Mobility will supply a comprehensive signalling and automation portfolio for the project. This will include its Communications-Based Train Control technology, Trainguard MT, electronic interlocking, telecommunications, operational supervision systems and Grade of Automation 4, the highest level of automated train operation.

The extension will bring the total length of Line 4-Yellow to 16.1 kilometres and add two new stations: Estação Chácara do Jockey and Estação Taboão da Serra. The latter will become the first São Paulo Metro station located outside the city limits.

For commuters, the extension will further strengthen Line 4-Yellow’s role as a key connector within São Paulo’s metro network.

The project will draw on Siemens Mobility expertise from several countries. The electronic interlocking system will be supplied from Germany, the CBTC system will come from France, and parts of the advanced telecommunications solutions will be sourced from Italy. Final integration will take place in Brazil.

In addition, six trains will be equipped with CBTC technology to ensure seamless integration into the wider network.

Line 4-Yellow is one of Siemens Mobility’s flagship projects in Latin America. Launched in 2010, it became the first metro line in the region to operate fully automatically.

Today, the line carries around 740,000 passengers each day across its nearly 13-kilometre route. It uses Siemens Mobility’s Trainguard MT CBTC technology and operates with headways of just 90 seconds, while maintaining punctuality and availability rates close to 100%.

As one of São Paulo’s most important transit lines, Line 4-Yellow connects major residential, commercial and cultural districts and helps reduce road congestion in a city of more than 12 million inhabitants.

The extension is expected to build on this role by expanding access to high-capacity, automated public transport and supporting cleaner, more efficient urban mobility in the São Paulo metropolitan region.
