Siemens Mobility Secures Major Velaro Train and Service Contract With Italo Holding

(IN BRIEF) Siemens Mobility has signed an approximately €3 billion contract with Italo Holding for 26 Velaro Multi System high-speed trains, with an option for 14 additional units. The eight-car trains will offer around 440 seats each and will be designed for speeds of up to 320 km/h. Their multi-system capability will allow operation under four different power supply systems, supporting cross-network flexibility. The agreement also includes a 30-year full-service contract, with maintenance carried out at Siemens Mobility’s depot in Dortmund. Digital services, including Railigent X and fleet monitoring, will support predictive maintenance and operational efficiency. Manufacturing will take place in Krefeld, Germany.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 21-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens Mobility has signed a contract with Italian high-speed rail operator Italo Holding for 26 eight-car Velaro Multi System high-speed trains, with an option for 14 additional units.

The agreement also includes a 30-year full-service contract covering long-term maintenance, digital services and fleet support. Siemens Mobility said the contract with Italo is worth approximately €3 billion.

The new Velaro trains will be manufactured at Siemens Mobility’s facility in Krefeld, Germany, while long-term maintenance will be carried out at the company’s own depot in Dortmund.

Michael Peter, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Mobility, said Italo Holding’s decision represents a strong vote of confidence in both Siemens Mobility and the Velaro platform.

He added that Velaro trains operate in numerous countries, have completed more than 3 billion kilometres in service and have carried millions of passengers worldwide.

Peter described the long-term partnership with Italo, covering both trains and three decades of full service, as a landmark project and a strong commitment to industrial value creation and innovation made in Germany.

The Velaro Multi System trains will be configured as eight-car trainsets, each offering approximately 440 seats.

They are designed to operate at speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour.

The trains’ multi-system technology will allow them to run under four different power supply systems: 1.5 kV and 3 kV direct current, as well as 15 kV and 25 kV alternating current.

The new fleet will also feature Starlink antenna integration, providing passengers with high-speed satellite internet connectivity during their journeys.

Under the 30-year service agreement, Siemens Mobility will provide comprehensive maintenance from its Dortmund depot.

The contract also includes digital services such as the Railigent X platform and fleet monitoring tools. These technologies will support predictive maintenance and improve operational efficiency throughout the fleet’s lifecycle.

Siemens Mobility said the agreement strengthens the long-term partnership with Italo and reinforces the role of the Velaro platform in modern high-speed rail operations across Europe.
