Siemens Gamesa to supply turbines for RWE’s 1 GW onshore wind farm portfolio

(IN BRIEF) German energy company RWE has signed a framework agreement with Siemens Gamesa to build onshore wind farms across Europe using Siemens Gamesa turbines. The agreement stipulates that Siemens Gamesa will supply wind turbines with a total capacity of 1,000 megawatts by 2027, making it a leading supplier of large components for RWE’s project pipeline. The wind farms will primarily use the Siemens Gamesa 5.X onshore platform with a flexible output of 6.6 to 7.0 megawatts, as well as the Siemens Gamesa 4.X platform. Both companies have a long-standing partnership in the onshore and offshore wind turbine sector. Financial details were not disclosed.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 2-May-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE AG (ETR: RWE), a German multinational energy company, has signed a framework agreement with Siemens Gamesa to build onshore wind farms with a total capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW) in Europe using Siemens Gamesa turbines by 2027. As a result of the agreement, Siemens Gamesa will become a leading supplier of large components for RWE’s project pipeline.

Katja Wünschel, CEO Onshore Wind and Solar Europe & Australia, RWE Renewables: “Europe needs more wind power. And fast. We are making our contribution and resolutely driving forward the energy transition. With this contract, RWE has secured fixed delivery dates and a structured price settlement for a gigawatt volume. This means the supply chain for major large-scale components of new onshore wind farms in Europe is already in place.”

Under the agreement, RWE will primarily procure the Siemens Gamesa 5.X onshore platform, which has a flexible rated output of 6.6 to 7.0 MW, for its onshore wind farms, including those in Germany. Additionally, the projects will also use the Siemens Gamesa 4.X platform. The contract includes a service agreement for the wind turbines, which will eventually allow RWE to conduct maintenance and inspections independently.

Richard Luijendijk, Onshore CEO of Siemens Gamesa: “The significance of this agreement for us at Siemens Gamesa extends beyond its magnitude, as it further enhances our collaboration with one of our key customers, RWE. With this deal in effect, we can guarantee the timely and cost-effective availability of our best-in-class technology, the Siemens Gamesa 5.X onshore platform. We thank RWE for their trust and are excited to continue our leadership in the energy transition, working together towards safeguarding the energy security in Europe.”

This framework agreement extends the long-standing cooperation between the two companies in both onshore and offshore wind turbines. Earlier this year, RWE selected Siemens Gamesa as the preferred supplier for its 1,000 MW Thor wind farm in the Danish North Sea, with both companies agreeing to use the recently-launched Siemens Gamesa GreenerTower for half of the wind turbines to be installed. RWE is also using recyclable rotor blades from Siemens Gamesa for its German offshore wind farm Kaskasi and its largest construction project, Sofia, an offshore lighthouse project with a capacity of 1.4 GW currently being built off the north-east coast of the UK.

Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed by either company.
