SCHOTT Group Climate Targets Validated by SBTi as SCHOTT Pharma Strengthens Decarbonisation Focus

(IN BRIEF) SCHOTT Pharma has reaffirmed its commitment to science-based climate action after the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated the updated climate targets of the SCHOTT Group, including SCHOTT Pharma’s business scope. The updated framework keeps the Group’s target to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 46.2 percent by fiscal year 2030 compared with a 2019 baseline, while introducing a new absolute Scope 3 target to reduce emissions from key value chain categories by 27.5 percent over the same period. SCHOTT Pharma said the updated approach shifts the focus from supplier commitments to measurable product and process improvements across the value chain, leading SCHOTT Group and SCHOTT Pharma to discontinue their previous internal “climate neutral by 2030” goal, which focused on Scope 1 and 2 emissions and included compensation. The company continues to pursue decarbonisation through renewable Energy Attribute Certificates, energy efficiency, technology innovation, supplier collaboration, circular economy approaches and product carbon footprint transparency, including examples such as a membrane-based Water for Injection system in Switzerland that improves water efficiency to more than 90 percent while reducing reliance on natural gas.

The company will continue to contribute to the Group’s validated targets as part of its sustainability strategy.

SCHOTT Pharma said its climate action approach remains focused on renewable energy sourcing through Energy Attribute Certificates, energy efficiency, technological innovation and emissions reductions across the value chain.

The updated framework also strengthens the focus on measurable reductions in Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, which cover value chain emissions.

He said the updated Scope 3 emissions target enables SCHOTT Pharma to prioritise actions in a more impact-oriented way and focus on the emission reductions that matter most across its value chain.

Moving from commitment to measurable impact

Climate action has been a strategic priority for SCHOTT Pharma for many years.

As a research-driven company, SCHOTT Pharma said climate targets should evolve in line with scientific developments, technological progress and internationally recognised standards.

The updated SBTi target framework of the SCHOTT Group builds on the existing climate strategy and keeps the previously validated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reduction target.

At the same time, it introduces an updated approach to Scope 3 emissions, with a stronger focus on absolute emissions reductions across the value chain.

By placing absolute Scope 3 emissions at the centre of the updated framework, SCHOTT Group and SCHOTT Pharma can prioritise measures based on their emissions reduction potential.

This shifts the focus from supplier commitments alone to concrete product and process improvements across the value chain.

As a result, decarbonisation efforts can be directed toward the most relevant sources of emissions, including those beyond direct suppliers.

Following validation of the updated science-based targets framework, SCHOTT Group and SCHOTT Pharma are discontinuing their previous internal goal of becoming “climate neutral by 2030.”

That earlier goal focused only on Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and included compensation as a key component.

Alignment with science-based climate action

The updated validation confirms that SCHOTT Group’s climate targets are aligned with SBTi requirements.

As science-based targets, they are aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement and support efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

In accordance with organisational boundary principles defined by the Science Based Targets initiative, the validation process was conducted at SCHOTT Group level.

SCHOTT Pharma will contribute to the Group’s science-based targets and is committed to achieving them through targeted decarbonisation measures across its operations and value chain.

The validated targets retain the existing commitment to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 46.2 percent by fiscal year 2030, compared with a 2019 baseline.

The updated framework also introduces an absolute Scope 3 target.

Under this target, SCHOTT Group commits to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the value chain categories with the greatest climate impact for the Group by 27.5 percent over the same period.

These categories include purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, and the processing of sold products, corresponding to Scope 3.1, Scope 3.3 and Scope 3.10.

Decarbonisation across operations and the value chain

SCHOTT Pharma continues to pursue a broad portfolio of decarbonisation initiatives across its global operations and value chains.

The company has sourced Energy Attribute Certificates from renewable energies for its global manufacturing network since 2021.

SCHOTT Pharma is also continuously improving energy efficiency across its manufacturing processes and site infrastructure while exploring the integration of new technologies.

At its site in Switzerland, for example, SCHOTT Pharma has changed its technology for generating Water for Injection, known as WFI.

The site moved from a conventional distillation-based process to an advanced membrane-based system.

The new technology eliminates the high fuel demand associated with conventional distillation and relies primarily on electricity and heat recovery instead of natural gas.

At the same time, water efficiency has improved from typically 70 percent to more than 90 percent, while maintaining full compliance with stringent pharmaceutical quality and regulatory requirements.

SCHOTT Pharma also works closely with suppliers and customers to identify opportunities for reducing emissions across the value chain.

These efforts include collaboration on renewable energy sourcing, material efficiency, circular economy approaches for secondary packaging and transparency around product carbon footprints.

For pharmaceutical containment solutions made from glass, emissions linked to the production of pharmaceutical glass tubing account for a significant share of the overall carbon footprint.

For this reason, innovations within SCHOTT Group’s tubing business, including new low-emission melting technologies, play an important role in reducing future Scope 3.1 emissions associated with pharmaceutical packaging solutions.

In sourcing decisions, SCHOTT Pharma evaluates suppliers’ climate targets and renewable electricity sourcing.

Through the industry initiative Energize, SCHOTT and SCHOTT Pharma support suppliers in their decarbonisation efforts by facilitating access to expertise, resources and renewable electricity procurement opportunities.
