SAMS Honors Exceptional Students at 2024 Graduation Ceremony

(IN BRIEF) SAMS celebrated its 2024 graduation, with Nele Thomsen named Student of the Year for her outstanding contributions to marine research during her studies. Thomsen, along with 44 other graduates, was recognized for her work on five research projects and hands-on experience in the North Atlantic. Several other students received awards for excellence, including Janika Sander and Jamie Nathaniel. SAMS Director Nick Owens also announced a unique plan to include “The Ocean” on the Board of Trustees, reinforcing the institution’s dedication to marine conservation.

(PRESS RELEASE) OBAN, 14-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), a partner of UHI, held its 2024 graduation ceremony, recognizing the remarkable achievements of its students. Among the 45 graduates, Nele Thomsen was named SAMS Student of the Year. Thomsen, who undertook five research projects during her undergraduate studies, gained hands-on experience in the North Atlantic and contributed to scientific papers. Her exceptional work in marine science has earned her a PhD position at SAMS.

During the ceremony, additional awards were presented to several outstanding students, including Janika Sander for the Tim Boyd Prize in Oceanography and Jamie Nathaniel for Overall Achievement. Keynote speaker Professor Sheila Heymans encouraged graduates to pursue their dreams, while SAMS Director Nick Owens announced plans to include “The Ocean” on the Board of Trustees, emphasizing SAMS’ commitment to thoughtful governance for marine conservation.

The event highlighted the dedication and accomplishments of the SAMS students and their contributions to the future of marine science.
