Safran to Supply SkyNaute Navigation Systems for Eve Air Mobility’s eVTOL Aircraft

Safran to Supply SkyNaute Navigation Systems for Eve Air Mobility’s eVTOL Aircraft

(IN BRIEF) Safran Electronics & Defense has been selected to supply its SkyNaute inertial navigation system for Eve Air Mobility’s eVTOL aircraft. Each aircraft will be equipped with two SkyNaute systems. SkyNaute is a hybrid inertial navigation system based on Safran’s patented HRG Crystal hemispherical resonant gyroscope technology. It is designed to deliver accurate, reliable and resilient navigation, including in situations where GNSS signals are unavailable, degraded or jammed. The agreement supports Eve Air Mobility’s development of electric urban air mobility solutions. Eve recently completed the hover and low-speed flight phase of its full-scale eVTOL prototype at Embraer’s Gavião Peixoto test facility in São Paulo, accumulating nearly two and a half hours of flight time.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 22-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Safran Electronics & Defense has been selected to supply its next-generation SkyNaute inertial navigation system for the electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft being developed by Eve Air Mobility.

Eve Air Mobility, an Embraer subsidiary, is focused on urban air mobility solutions and is developing an eVTOL aircraft designed to support a new generation of cleaner and more sustainable transport.

Under the programme, Safran will equip each Eve aircraft with two SkyNaute systems.

SkyNaute is a hybrid inertial navigation system based on Safran’s patented HRG Crystal technology, which uses a hemispherical resonant gyroscope.

The system is designed for demanding aeronautical applications and combines high navigation accuracy, integrity and proven in-service reliability.

Safran said SkyNaute’s next-generation architecture provides strong performance and robust navigation continuity, including in environments where Global Navigation Satellite System signals may be unavailable, degraded or jammed.

This capability is particularly important for urban air mobility operations, where aircraft require high levels of safety, reliability and navigation resilience.

SkyNaute was initially developed to meet demanding requirements in both defence and civil aviation applications. Safran said the technology reflects its dual-use approach to advanced inertial navigation.

Benjamin Declety, Head of Avionics Global Business Unit at Safran Electronics & Defense, said Safran is applying its inertial navigation expertise to the next generation of civil aviation.

“With SkyNaute, Safran Electronics & Defense is now leveraging its inertial navigation expertise to serve the next generation of civil aviation,” said Declety.

He added that Safran is proud to support Eve Air Mobility in the development of its eVTOL aircraft and contribute to the emergence of new urban air mobility solutions.

Johann Bordais, Chief Executive Officer of Eve Air Mobility, said integrating an advanced navigation system such as SkyNaute is essential for maximising the safety, reliability and performance of the company’s eVTOL aircraft.

He said Safran’s recognised expertise in inertial navigation strengthens Eve’s aircraft architecture and reinforces its commitment to delivering a robust and certifiable solution for the urban air mobility market.

Eve Air Mobility recently completed the hover and low-speed flight phase in the flight test campaign of its full-scale eVTOL prototype at Embraer’s Gavião Peixoto test facility in the State of São Paulo.

The prototype has accumulated nearly two and a half hours of flight time.

The milestone marks an important step in the development of electric and urban aviation, supporting progress toward cleaner and more sustainable mobility solutions.
