Sadler’s Wells celebrates the centenary of the Rite of Spring, one of the highlights of dance in London this spring

And the world premiere of Raven Girl comes to the Royal Opera House in May

9-4-2013 — /europawire.eu/ —  ‘A String of Rites’, a series of three events commissioned by Sadler’s Wells to mark the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Stravinsky’s masterpiece, ‘The Rite of Spring’, begins on Thursday 11th April 2013, and dance fans who want to enjoy these brand new productions while staying in the city overnight can find a London hotel nearby by searching online for the hotel which best suits their needs.

Also at Sadler’s Wells, the National Ballet of Canada make their first London appearance in 26 years, bringing Alexei Ratmansky’s critically acclaimed ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to the London stage. The world premiere of ‘Raven Girl’, an exciting collaboration between multi award-winning British choreographer Wayne McGregor and novelist Audrey Niffenegger, author of The Time Traveler’s Wife, arrives at the Royal Opera House main stage in May 2013 (Friday 24th May to Saturday 8th June). It’s an intriguing prospect, performed in a double bill with Balanchine’s Symphony in C.

The Barbican’s ‘Dancing Around Duchamp’ season continues with the Richard Alston Dance Company performing choreographer Merce Cunningham’s movements against the backdrop of ‘The Bride And The Bachelors’ exhibition as part of. Dancers perform in the gallery on Thursday nights and weekends but there is also a ticketed performance on Wednesday 29th May 2013.

The English National Ballet – currently undergoing a rebranding with a new ad campaign featuring costumes by Vivienne Westwood – dance Derek Deane’s critically acclaimed ‘SwanLake’, revived in the round at the Royal Albert Hall, from Wednesday 12th June 2013 until Sunday 23rd June 2013. In July, the dance company celebrates 75 years since Nureyev’s birth and 20 since his death, with ‘A Tribute To Rudolf Nureyev’, for five performances only between Tuesday 25th and Thursday 27th July, at the London Coliseum.

Those in search of something completely different should note the arrival of Canadian company RUBBERBANDance Group in May, who combine ballet with hip hop. They will appear at the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room with their UK premiere of ‘Gravity of Center’ (Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd May), a piece of dance inspired by the collapse of Lehman Brothers.
