S-Bahn Berlin, Siemens Mobility and Stadler Deutschland Secure Major Contract for Future Berlin S-Bahn Services

(IN BRIEF) S-Bahn Berlin, Siemens Mobility and Stadler Deutschland have won a major contract for the future of Berlin’s S-Bahn network. The legally binding award covers 350 four-car, fully walk-through trains, 30 years of fleet maintenance and 15 years of operations on the North–South and Stadtbahn sub-networks. The new trains will build on the latest Siemens and Stadler vehicle series already used on Berlin’s Ringbahn, with upgrades including a modern driver’s cab, enhanced fire protection, cybersecurity measures, improved energy efficiency, greater accessibility and passenger comfort features such as USB-C charging ports. The maintenance programme will use Siemens Mobility’s Railigent X platform for predictive, data-driven maintenance and real-time fleet monitoring. The contract is also expected to support thousands of jobs and strengthen regional value creation in Berlin, Brandenburg and across Germany.

(PRESS RELEASE) BUSSNANG, 16-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — S-Bahn Berlin, Siemens Mobility and Stadler Deutschland have been awarded a major contract for the future of Berlin’s S-Bahn network, creating the basis for a modern, high-performance and customer-focused mobility system in the capital region.

Following receipt of the award notice, the contract is now legally binding. The three partners will combine their expertise in rail operations, train manufacturing and maintenance to deliver long-term S-Bahn services for passengers across Berlin and Brandenburg.

The contract covers the supply of 350 four-car, fully walk-through trains for the Berlin S-Bahn system. It also includes maintenance of the fleet over a period of 30 years and operation of the North–South and Stadtbahn sub-networks for 15 years.

Heiko Büttner, Chief Executive Officer of S-Bahn Berlin GmbH, said the S-Bahn has supported mobility in the region for more than 100 years and today carries around 1.4 million people every day.

Peter Spuhler, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Stadler Rail AG, said Stadler will implement the contract together with S-Bahn Berlin and Siemens with full commitment.

He said he personally supported the aim of ensuring that Berlin receives modern S-Bahn trains as quickly as possible.

“With this contract, Stadler will in future manufacture all modern U-Bahn and S-Bahn trains for Berlin. The 350 trains will be built in Berlin and for Berlin,” said Spuhler.

The contract award is also seen as an important signal for the economy of Berlin, Brandenburg and Germany. It is expected to secure thousands of jobs and strengthen regional value creation, from vehicle manufacturing to maintenance rooted in the capital region.

The new trains are based on the latest vehicle series already delivered by Siemens and Stadler for Berlin’s S-Bahn ring network. Those vehicles were delivered on schedule and have since travelled more than 120 million kilometres, with very high technical reliability.

For the new Stadtbahn and North–South sub-network contract, Siemens and Stadler have further developed this proven vehicle concept. Updates include a modern driver’s cab, improved fire protection and cybersecurity measures designed to meet the latest requirements.

The trains’ reliable and energy-saving traction system has also been further optimised, setting new standards for energy efficiency across the full service life of the fleet.

The familiar exterior design of the vehicles will remain unchanged. Features already known to passengers from the Ringbahn will gradually be introduced across more of the S-Bahn network.

The new vehicles are designed to offer greater comfort and accessibility. Stadler’s bright and flexible interior concept will support different passenger needs, while the redesigned multi-purpose area will include a wheelchair space, a height-adjustable seat and additional options for companions of passengers with reduced mobility.

Passenger comfort will also be supported by a newly developed air-conditioning system from Stadler. The system uses an environmentally friendly, halogen-free refrigerant and chilled-water technology to keep interiors cool even during high temperatures.

A USB-C charging port will be available at every second seat.

Maintenance of the new S-Bahn fleet over the 30-year contract term will be supported by Railigent X from Siemens Mobility, a central digital platform for data-driven maintenance and operations.

The system connects vehicles, infrastructure and train IT while continuously analysing condition data. This enables predictive maintenance, optimised maintenance processes and improved fleet availability.

The Railigent Fleet Manager monitors vehicle condition in real time, analyses operating data and supports the creation of maintenance tasks. This allows potential disruptions to be identified early and helps increase reliability.

Maintenance processes will be digitally planned and managed, covering areas such as materials, asset management and workforce planning. Siemens Mobility said this will improve efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.

Additional cybersecurity services, including software maintenance and vulnerability monitoring, will support the secure operation of systems and vehicles.

Through the contract, S-Bahn Berlin, Siemens Mobility and Stadler Deutschland aim to provide Berlin and Brandenburg with a reliable, efficient and future-ready S-Bahn system for decades to come.
