RWE’s New 53 MW Mondonuovo Wind Farm in Apulia Powers 55,000 Homes

(IN BRIEF) RWE has officially commissioned the 53.1 MW Mondonuovo wind farm in Apulia, featuring nine 5.9 MW turbines to supply green power for up to 55,000 households. This milestone brings RWE’s total Italian renewables capacity to 589 MW across 17 wind farms and one solar plant—enough for over 500,000 homes. CEO Katja Wünschel highlighted the project’s role in advancing Italy’s clean‑energy goals. RWE is also developing two agrivoltaic plants in Campania and preparing to start construction on the 45 MW Venusia and 48 MW Serra Palino wind farms, recently awarded in the FER 1 auction.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN/ROME, 17-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has brought the 53.1 MW Mondonuovo onshore wind farm into operation after a year of construction work. Situated in Mesagne, Province of Brindisi, Apulia, the project features nine 5.9 MW turbines capable of generating enough clean electricity to power up to 55,000 Italian households. Some 150 RWE staff and external specialists collaborated on site to complete the installation.

“Commissioning Mondonuovo represents a significant advance in our commitment to Italy’s transition toward reliable, affordable renewable energy,” said Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia. “I extend my gratitude to our teams, local partners, and community stakeholders. With this addition, RWE’s Italian renewables portfolio now serves over half a million homes—and more projects harnessing wind and solar are poised to follow.”

RWE’s integrated approach in Italy spans development, construction, operations, and energy marketing. Today, the company runs 17 onshore wind farms alongside a solar facility, collectively boasting 589 MW of capacity. Current builds include the 9.8 MWac Morcone and 9.3 MWac Acquafredda agri‑PV plants in Campania. Furthermore, RWE secured contracts in March’s FER 1 auction for two additional wind farms: Venusia (45 MW) in Basilicata and Serra Palino (48 MW) in Apulia. Ground‑breaking on both sites is imminent.
