RWE to Repower Rethen-Vordorf Wind Farm in Lower Saxony and Quadruple Capacity

The company will replace three existing turbines with three modern turbines, increasing capacity from 5.4 MW to 21 MW. The upgraded wind farm is expected to supply electricity to around 17,000 households. Construction is due to begin shortly, with commissioning planned for the end of 2027. The project will also provide financial benefits to surrounding local authorities and projects, with RWE paying 0.3 cents per kilowatt-hour generated, including the amount required under Lower Saxony’s Participation Act. This could result in annual revenue of up to €165,000.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 15-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE is set to modernise its Rethen-Vordorf onshore wind farm in Lower Saxony after securing a contract in the latest tender held by Germany’s Federal Network Agency.

The project, located in the district of Gifhorn, will see RWE replace three existing wind turbines with three new, more powerful turbines. The repowering will increase the wind farm’s installed capacity from 5.4 megawatts to 21 megawatts, quadrupling output while keeping the same number of turbines on the site.

Once operational, the modernised wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to supply around 17,000 households.

Construction work is scheduled to begin shortly, with commissioning planned for the end of 2027.

Sopna Sury, Chief Executive Officer of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said the project demonstrates the value of upgrading older wind farms with modern technology.

“We will have the same number of turbines, but with four times the capacity,” said Sury. “Here in Rethen-Vordorf in Lower Saxony, we will generate more power from the same site. This demonstrates the potential of modernising older wind farms.”

The surrounding region is also expected to benefit financially. RWE will pay a total of 0.3 cents per kilowatt-hour generated to nearby local authorities and projects. This includes the 0.1 cents required under Lower Saxony’s Participation Act.

According to RWE, the payments could generate annual revenue of up to €165,000 for local authorities and projects.

The company said renewable energy remains central to a secure power supply as electricity demand continues to rise. Onshore wind generation is described by RWE as a cost-effective and proven technology that can support the energy transition.

RWE currently operates onshore wind farms in Germany with a total capacity of around 770 megawatts and is continuing to expand its portfolio.
