RWE Switches On 35 MW Langford Solar Farm with Pioneering Hybrid Storage in Devon

(IN BRIEF) RWE energised the 35 MW (AC) Langford Solar Farm in Devon—its first UK solar project—on 2 July 2025. The site, equipped with an innovative 35 MW (AC) hybrid battery storage system, will generate approximately 49,500 MWh per year, powering over 15,000 homes and cutting more than 25,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. As the lead of eleven English solar projects totalling nearly 530 MW (AC) plus 105 MW (AC) storage, RWE is scaling its UK solar footprint. Langford also features a £40,000 community fund for Cullompton, enhanced biodiversity measures, and will contribute significant local jobs and business rates. This project supports the UK’s goal of reaching 45–47 GW of solar capacity by 2030.

(PRESS RELEASE) SWINDON, 3-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has officially energised its inaugural UK solar installation, the 35 MW (AC) Langford Solar Farm in Devon, on 2 July 2025. Featuring a pioneering hybrid battery storage system that optimises its grid connection, the facility is projected to produce some 49,500 MWh annually—enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of over 15,000 average UK households.

Langford is the first of eleven English solar sites RWE is constructing this year, collectively amounting to nearly 530 MW (AC) of solar capacity alongside 105 MW (AC) of co-located battery storage. Its adjoining 35 MW (AC) energy storage system is in the final stages of construction and will be operational in the coming weeks. Over its 40-year lifespan, the project is estimated to abate more than 25,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year, equivalent to removing over 15,500 cars from the road.

“Bringing Langford online represents a milestone for RWE’s solar ambitions in the UK,” said Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia. “This project showcases our team’s expertise and dedication, underlining solar power’s vital role in a secure, sustainable, and affordable energy future. Langford Solar Farm is just the start of our UK expansion, supporting national clean-energy targets and delivering lasting benefits to local communities.”

In line with RWE’s UK Solar Developers Charter, Langford includes a £40,000 community benefit fund awarded to Cullompton Town Council for rooftop solar PV and sustainability schemes. The build phase supported 70–80 jobs and the site will generate over £110,000 in annual business rates. Designed for biodiversity enhancement, the development delivers a net gain of more than 50% in habitats and 10% in hedgerows, with species-rich grasslands, wildlife nesting boxes, and ecological corridors woven into the landscape.

This deployment bolsters the UK government’s 2030 Clean Power Mission, which, following the recent publication of the Solar Roadmap and Clean Power Action Plan, targets 45–47 GW of solar capacity by the end of the decade.
