RWE Reaches Halfway Point in Turbine Installation for Nordseecluster A Offshore Wind Farm

(IN BRIEF) RWE has reached the halfway point in turbine installation for Nordseecluster A, the first phase of its 1.6 GW Nordseecluster offshore wind project in the German North Sea, after installing the 22nd Vestas turbine around 50 kilometres north of Juist. Nordseecluster A will comprise 44 turbines with a total capacity of 660 MW, with all turbines expected to be installed by the end of 2026 and full grid connection planned for early 2027. The second phase, Nordseecluster B, will add 900 MW, with foundation installation scheduled for 2027, turbine installation in 2028 and commercial operation expected in early 2029. Once completed, the two wind farms are expected to generate around 6.5 terawatt hours of climate-friendly electricity annually, supporting Germany’s energy security and industrial decarbonisation, including through customised energy solutions and a 110 MW Power Purchase Agreement signed with Amazon for Nordseecluster B. The project is jointly owned by RWE with a 51% share and Norges Bank Investment Management with 49%, while RWE is responsible for construction and operation.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 1-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has reached the halfway point in the installation of wind turbines for Nordseecluster A, the first construction phase of the company’s major offshore wind project in the German North Sea.

The milestone was reached with the installation of the 22nd wind turbine around 50 kilometres north of the German island of Juist.

A total of 44 Vestas turbines will be installed during the first construction phase, each with a capacity of up to 15 MW.

The turbines are being transported and installed at sea using DEME’s installation vessel Norse Wind.

The Nordseecluster project remains on schedule.

The first phase, Nordseecluster A, will have a capacity of 660 MW and is expected to be fully connected to the grid at the beginning of 2027.

The second phase, Nordseecluster B, will add a further 900 MW of offshore wind capacity from 2029.

Together, the two phases will create a 1.6 GW offshore wind project.

Tobias Keitel, CTO of RWE Offshore Wind, said the halfway point does not mean the teams are taking a break.

He said installation and commissioning work is continuing every day as additional turbines are brought online.

Keitel added that, with a total capacity of 1.6 GW, Nordseecluster is currently RWE’s largest offshore wind project under construction.

Once fully operational, he said the project will strengthen Germany’s energy security and support the decarbonisation of industry.

Step-by-step commissioning underway

RWE expects all 44 turbines for Nordseecluster A to be installed by the end of 2026.

Testing and commissioning are taking place gradually for individual turbines.

The first turbine began producing electricity and feeding power into the grid at the end of July 2026.

Nordseecluster A is scheduled to reach full grid connection at the beginning of 2027.

Work is also progressing on the second expansion phase, Nordseecluster B.

Production of the foundations has already started.

The foundations are scheduled to be installed in 2027, followed by installation of the 60 Vestas turbines in 2028.

Nordseecluster B is expected to begin commercial operation in early 2029.

Supporting industrial decarbonisation

Once both phases are completed, the Nordseecluster wind farms are expected to generate around 6.5 terawatt hours of climate-friendly electricity each year.

RWE plans to use the electricity to support industrial customers with customised energy solutions as they work to decarbonise their operations.

These customers increasingly include technology companies.

Earlier this year, RWE signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Amazon for 110 MW from Nordseecluster B.

Nordseecluster is a joint project between RWE, which holds a 51% share, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which holds a 49% share.

RWE is responsible for construction and will also operate the offshore wind farms once completed.

RWE’s offshore wind portfolio

RWE is one of the world’s leading offshore wind companies and has more than 20 years of experience in developing, building and operating offshore wind farms.

In addition to Nordseecluster, RWE is currently implementing three other large offshore wind projects.

These are Sofia in the United Kingdom, with a capacity of 1.4 GW; Thor in Denmark, with a capacity of 1.1 GW and developed in collaboration with Norges Bank Investment Management; and OranjeWind in the Netherlands, with a capacity of 795 MW and developed in collaboration with TotalEnergies.

Once completed, these projects will have a combined generation capacity of 4.8 GW, with RWE’s share amounting to 3.1 GW.

RWE also has a large pipeline of offshore wind development projects.

Overall, the company intends to expand its offshore wind capacity by a net 5 GW by 2031.
