RWE Reaches Halfway Milestone in Turbine Installation at Denmark’s Thor Offshore Wind Farm

(IN BRIEF) RWE has installed half of the 72 turbines at the 1.1 GW Thor offshore wind farm off Denmark’s west coast, marking a key milestone in the construction of Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm. The turbines, supplied by Siemens Gamesa, each have a capacity of up to 15 MW. Installation is being carried out from the Port of Esbjerg using Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s Brave Tern vessel. The remaining 36 turbines are expected to be installed by the end of 2026, with full commissioning planned for spring 2027. Thor will also feature sustainability-focused components, including CO₂-reduced steel towers and recyclable rotor blades. Once complete, the wind farm will be able to power the equivalent of more than one million Danish homes.

Thor is Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm and remains on track for completion, with turbine installation, testing and commissioning activities well underway.

Each turbine, supplied by Siemens Gamesa, has a capacity of up to 15 megawatts. The turbines stand around 148 metres above sea level and are fitted with 115-metre rotor blades.

Tobias Keitel, Chief Technology Officer at RWE Offshore Wind, said the halfway point marks an important step toward delivering Denmark’s largest offshore wind project.

“With every turbine we install, we move closer to delivering Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm,” said Keitel.

He thanked RWE’s project team and supply chain partners for keeping the project on track, including during challenging conditions, and said the focus is now on completing construction and bringing Thor into full commercial operation by 2027.

Turbine installation is being carried out from the Port of Esbjerg, supported by the Fred. Olsen Windcarrier vessel Brave Tern.

The remaining 36 turbines are expected to be installed by the end of 2026. Testing and full commissioning are scheduled to be completed by spring 2027.

Once fully operational, Thor will be capable of producing enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households.

The project also includes several sustainability features. Thor will be the first offshore wind farm in the world to use 36 carbon-reduced steel turbine towers from Siemens Gamesa.

In addition, 40 turbines will feature a total of 120 recyclable rotor blades, supporting a more circular approach to offshore wind development and aligning with RWE’s wider sustainability ambitions.

Thor is being developed as a joint project between RWE, which holds a 51% stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which holds 49%.

RWE is responsible for construction and operations across the full lifecycle of the offshore wind farm.
