RWE Advances UK Offshore Wind Buildout With Completion of Sofia Turbine Installation Campaign

(IN BRIEF) RWE has completed the installation of all 100 turbines at the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, one of the UK’s largest offshore wind projects and a major renewable energy development located more than 200 kilometres offshore. The final turbine was installed on June 10, 2026, completing an installation campaign carried out with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy using Cadeler’s Wind Peak jack-up vessel. The project uses 100 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD turbines, each with a capacity of 14 MW, standing 252 metres tall at the highest point with 108-metre blades and a 222-metre rotor diameter. Half of the turbines include Siemens Gamesa RecyclableBlades and related components assembled at Green Port Hull in the UK. Testing and commissioning of the HVDC distribution system is continuing before turbine connection to the system. Once fully operational, Sofia will be capable of generating up to 1.4 GW of renewable electricity, enough to power around 1.2 million typical UK homes.

(PRESS RELEASE) SWINDON, 12-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has completed installation of all 100 turbines at the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, marking a major construction milestone for one of the United Kingdom’s largest offshore wind projects.

The final turbine was successfully installed on June 10, 2026, at the offshore site located more than 200 kilometres from the UK coast. The project uses 100 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD turbines, each with a capacity of 14 megawatts. Once fully operational, Sofia will be capable of generating up to 1.4 GW of renewable electricity.

The installation campaign was delivered in partnership with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and used the Wind Peak construction jack-up vessel, owned by Cadeler and operated by Siemens Gamesa. Since March 2025, the vessel has transported and installed turbine components in batches of six sets at a time.

Each turbine at Sofia reaches 252 metres at its highest point and is fitted with 108-metre-long blades and a 222-metre rotor diameter. RWE said testing and commissioning of the high-voltage direct current distribution system is continuing at the site before the turbines are connected to the HVDC system. This work is an important next stage as the project moves closer to full operation.

Half of the turbines at Sofia are fitted with specialist RecyclableBlades and associated components manufactured by Siemens Gamesa. These were assembled at Siemens Gamesa’s facility at Green Port Hull in the UK, supporting the project’s connection to the country’s offshore wind supply chain.

When fully operational, the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power approximately 1.2 million typical UK homes. The project further strengthens RWE’s offshore wind portfolio and supports the UK’s wider transition toward low-carbon power generation.

The completion of turbine installation represents a key step in bringing Sofia into operation and reinforces RWE’s role as a major developer and operator in the offshore wind sector.
