Rolls-Royce Partners with Stadtwerke Ulm to Secure CO2-Free Hydropower and Reduce Emissions

Rolls-Royce has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with the municipal utilities of Ulm/Neu-Ulm (SWU) for the purchase of around 20,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of CO2-free electrical energy annually. The electricity comes entirely from the production of the Donaustetten hydroelectric power plant. (IN BRIEF) Rolls-Royce has signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Stadtwerke Ulm/Neu-Ulm (SWU) to purchase 20,000 MWh of CO2-free hydropower annually. This agreement will help Rolls-Royce reduce its carbon emissions by approximately 7,000 tons each year, marking a significant step in the company’s sustainability efforts.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 21-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Rolls-Royce has secured a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Stadtwerke Ulm/Neu-Ulm (SWU), committing to the annual purchase of 20,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of sustainably generated hydropower. This partnership is part of Rolls-Royce’s strategy to reduce its carbon footprint, as the company will significantly cut its annual carbon emissions by approximately 7,000 tons. The electricity, sourced exclusively from the Donaustetten hydropower plant, will provide Rolls-Royce with reliable, CO2-free energy over a five-year period.

Bernd Baader, Head of Engine Assembly Plants and Infrastructure at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating, “This collaboration not only contributes to the local energy transition but also helps us further increase the share of renewable energy in our electricity mix, aligning with our strategic goal to significantly reduce our CO2 emissions.”

Klaus Eder, Managing Director of SWU, emphasized the role of the partnership in the broader shift toward a climate-neutral economy. “Our hydropower plants have been a cornerstone of clean and reliable energy for decades. This agreement is a major step in supporting Rolls-Royce in its efforts to lower its carbon footprint, and partnerships like this are vital to advancing the transition to a sustainable economy,” Eder explained.

Beyond this agreement, Rolls-Royce is already taking significant steps to drive its own energy transition. The company operates three microgrids at its plants in Friedrichshafen, Augsburg, and Aiken (USA), where photovoltaic systems are intelligently connected to battery storage and combined heat and power plants to ensure a climate-friendly energy supply. Additionally, Rolls-Royce has partnered with local suppliers to enhance the integration of renewable energy into the grid around its facilities. Since 2022, two solar parks near the company’s Power Systems headquarters in Friedrichshafen have been generating CO2-free electricity, contributing to the company’s green energy mix.

Rolls-Royce’s ongoing investments in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure are key components of its efforts to meet its environmental goals and reduce its overall greenhouse gas emissions.

Stadtwerke Ulm is a leading regional energy supplier that has been relying on renewable energies for decades. The SWU operates several hydroelectric power plants on the Danube, which reliably supply energy to Ulm and Neu-Ulm, even when there is a lack of sunlight or wind. With a broad portfolio of sustainable solutions, SWU supports both private households and companies on their way to a climate-neutral future.
