Revolutionizing Urban Mobility: MAN Truck & Bus and Mobileye Team Up for Automated City Buses

(IN BRIEF) MAN Truck & Bus is partnering with autonomous driving technology specialist Mobileye to develop autonomous city buses. The collaboration aims to achieve highly automated driving in city buses that are ready for series production. The first milestone is a pilot operation of an automated city bus with a safety driver planned for 2025 in Munich. The partnership addresses the benefits of automation in terms of total cost of ownership and personnel deployment. Mobileye will provide its intelligent Automated Driving System, while MAN Truck & Bus will develop the necessary vehicle architecture. The project will integrate autonomous vehicles into the urban environment and explore intelligent solutions. Germany’s legal framework for autonomous driving provides an advantage for the project’s success.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 18-May-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — MAN Truck & Bus is collaborating with Mobileye, a specialist in autonomous driving technology, to advance the automation of its buses. The partnership aims to achieve highly automated driving in city buses that is ready for series production. The first milestone is the pilot operation of an automated city bus with a safety driver, planned for 2025 as part of the MINGA research project in Munich.

The collaboration addresses the growing need for automated city buses, driven by high total cost of ownership (TCO) savings and a shortage of driving personnel. Additionally, the rise of highly automated vehicles in the market underscores the economic efficiency and improved mobility offered by automated solutions in urban areas.

Mobileye will provide its Mobileye Drive™ intelligent Automated Driving System (ADS) while MAN Truck & Bus will develop the necessary vehicle architecture. The integration of autonomous vehicles into the urban environment goes beyond driving, encompassing various activities of driving personnel, such as passenger communication and ticket sales. MAN will explore intelligent solutions enabled by digitalization.

The first automated MAN bus, Lion’s City E, will operate in Munich’s city traffic by 2025, with a safety driver on bus route 144 in the Olympic Park. The project is part of the MINGA research project, led by the City of Munich’s Mobility Department and funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. MAN Truck & Bus plans further pilots and aims for full series production by the end of the decade.

Johann Jungwirth, Senior Vice President, Autonomous Vehicles at Mobileye, commented on the partnership:

“We are excited about the future collaboration with MAN Truck & Bus. We care about sustainable mobility solutions in both the private and public sectors and see autonomous vehicle technologies as an important contribution to making public transport safer, more efficient and more accessible. MAN Truck & Bus and Mobileye share a clear vision for autonomous mobility of the future, which is underlined by this cooperation.”

Germany’s legal framework for autonomous driving provides a favorable environment for the project’s success.
