REN Expands Renewable Gas Certification Activity With First Biomethane Transport Guarantee of Origin

REN Expands Renewable Gas Certification Activity With First Biomethane Transport Guarantee of Origin

(IN BRIEF) REN, acting through its Guarantees of Origin Issuing Entity, has completed Portugal’s first certification of a Guarantee of Origin for biomethane used in the transport sector. G3 | Go Green Gas becomes the first company in the country to certify renewable biomethane for transport through the national platform. The development supports the use of renewable gases in heavy passenger and freight mobility and provides a verified way for suppliers and users to demonstrate the renewable origin of the energy they consume. The certification also highlights the expansion of EEGO’s gas-related activities and its connection to European Guarantee of Origin systems through the Association of Issuing Bodies and the European Energy Certificate System.

(PRESS RELEASE) LISBON, 6-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — REN – Rede Eléctrica Nacional S.A., acting as Portugal’s Guarantees of Origin Issuing Entity (EEGO), has registered the country’s first Guarantee of Origin certification for biomethane supplied to the transport sector.

The transaction makes G3 | Go Green Gas the first company in Portugal to certify the renewable origin of biomethane used for transport through the national Guarantees of Origin system.

The certification represents a further step in the development of Portugal’s renewable gas market and supports efforts to decarbonise road transport, particularly for heavy passenger and freight fleets.

Isabel Fernandes, Director of Energy Services at REN, said the operation demonstrates the readiness of the national system to support a rapidly developing renewable gas market.

“This operation confirms the maturity and robustness of the national platform as a benchmark instrument for certifying the renewable origin of gases in Portugal, demonstrating its ability to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving market,” Fernandes said. “It also demonstrates, in practice, the interconnection of the Portuguese system with its European counterparts.”

Guarantees of Origin are electronic certificates that verify that a specific quantity of energy has been generated from a particular source and technology. For renewable energy, these certificates allow suppliers and end users to demonstrate the renewable origin of their energy consumption, including for sustainability strategies and reporting obligations.

G3 | Go Green Gas specialises in mobility solutions powered by gas for heavy passenger and freight transport operators. The company began marketing biomethane in Portugal in 2023 and has placed certification of renewable origin at the centre of its offering.

Joaquim Marques, Chief Financial Officer and Head of Business Operations at G3 | Go Green Gas, said the certification strengthens the company’s long-term commitment to renewable mobility.

“This certification is a concrete step towards accelerating the energy transition and the decarbonisation of road transport,” Marques said. “It also strengthens a long-standing commitment to mobility based on renewable gases, now carried out within the national system, in line with the practice that G3 had already been ensuring.”

EEGO is responsible for operating the electronic system for issuing, transferring and certifying Guarantees of Origin in mainland Portugal. The platform expanded into the gas sector in June 2024.

In November 2024, EEGO joined the Association of Issuing Bodies and the European Energy Certificate System, enabling international operations and the circulation and mutual recognition of Guarantees of Origin among participating countries.

The latest certification marks an important operational milestone for renewable gas in Portugal, linking biomethane used in transport with a recognised system for verifying its renewable source.
