RBS Selects Stadler to Deliver New Fleet for Solothurn-Bern Line

(IN BRIEF) RBS has selected Stadler to supply 20 new multiple-unit trains for the Solothurn-Bern RegioExpress line (RE5) between 2028 and 2030. The CHF 190 million contract aims to replace aging “Seconda” trains, increase capacity, and improve passenger comfort with features like barrier-free access, multifunctional spaces, and environmentally friendly air conditioning. The trains, capable of operating in triple formations to handle 50% more passengers, will strengthen regional transport and address growing demand. The project builds on RBS’s longstanding partnership with Stadler and reflects a commitment to modernizing public transport in Switzerland.

(PRESS RELEASE) BUSSNANG, 28-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Regionalverkehr Bern-Solothurn (RBS) has awarded Stadler the contract to supply 20 new three-car multiple-unit trains for the Solothurn-Bern RegioExpress line (RE5). Scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030, the modern trains aim to enhance passenger capacity, improve comfort, and offer a more sustainable public transport solution. The vehicles will be manufactured in Bussnang, Switzerland, with the contract valued at approximately CHF 190 million.

A Partnership Built on Trust and Quality

RBS launched the tender for the fleet renewal in December 2023, seeking to replace aging trains and increase capacity on the busy RE5 route. The decision to partner with Stadler reflects the company’s proven ability to deliver reliable, high-quality vehicles. Fabian Schmid, Director of RBS, praised Stadler for their efficient project planning and understanding of passenger needs, stating, “This collaboration allows us to significantly enhance passenger comfort and make public transport in the region more attractive over the long term.”

Peter Spuhler, Chairman of Stadler Rail, highlighted the long-standing relationship between RBS and Stadler: “This order reaffirms years of successful cooperation. We are proud to once again provide customised, reliable, and comfortable trains for RBS and its passengers.”

Features of the New Trains

The new fleet incorporates advanced technology and passenger-friendly designs based on feedback from users of the existing “Worbla” trains. Each train is 60 meters long, with the option to operate in triple formations to accommodate up to 50% more passengers during peak hours.

Key features include:

  • Barrier-free access with extendable sliding steps for easy boarding.
  • Multifunctional areas for pushchairs, bicycles, luggage, and wheelchairs in second-class carriages.
  • 21 first-class seats and 103 second-class seats, along with 15 foldable seats.
  • Environmentally friendly air conditioning and power outlets at every seat.

Strengthening Regional Transport

Production of the first three units is set to begin in 2026, with testing and driver training scheduled for 2027. The trains will gradually be integrated into the RBS network, with full deployment of triple formations anticipated by 2030. This expansion will help address the growing demand for services along the Solothurn-Bern corridor, ensuring reliable and efficient transport for commuters.

Replacing Aging “Seconda” Trains

The new trains will replace the aging “Seconda” fleet, which has served the region for over 30 years and is increasingly difficult to maintain due to rising costs and limited spare parts availability. The “Seconda” trains will be retired, with the current RE trains “NExT” taking over their routes on the S8 line.

By modernizing its fleet, RBS is investing in the future of regional transport, enhancing the travel experience for passengers while supporting sustainable mobility in Switzerland.
