“Tenacious” students from Durham University have won a trip to India as part of an initiative to increase employee diversity at RBS and raise money for The Prince’s Trust.
Edinburgh, Scotland, 26-5-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — The initiative, called An Indian Summer, starts with a recruitment drive at 21 universities around the UK. A life sized model of an elephant is used to attract attention, and after a selection round at the students’ local Indian restaurant, successful students go on to take part in a 24 hour fund raising challenge.
The final part of the competition requires to students to report back on their experience and reveal how much money they have raised.
Ross McEwan, RBS chief executive, awarded Team Durham the 2014 top prize for their “tenacity and team work” which helped them to raise £2,000 in just 24 hours by selling Indian lassi drinks to office workers.
The winners will spend three weeks in India learning about sustainable development through the work of RBS’ charity partner Grassroutes, and gain work experience in the RBS offices in Mumbai.
Georgina Mackey was part of the 2013 winning Team Manchester and will be joining the Corporate Banking team at RBS this summer.
She said: “The competition has taught me so much. It has given me the confidence and skills to showcase what I can do and provided an invaluable platform from which to start my career. It has been the enthusiasm and insightfulness of everyone I have met at RBS that has been the catalyst to applying for a Summer Internship and I’m looking forward to continuing my journey with RBS.”
Since the launch of An Indian Summer, 81 students have joined RBS and more than £65,000 has been raised for the Princes Trust.
