PUMA Recognized Among Europe’s Top Ten Climate Leaders by Financial Times

(IN BRIEF) PUMA has been recognized as one of Europe’s top ten Climate Leaders by the Financial Times, achieving its highest-ever ranking of eighth place. The company’s early achievement of its climate goals and new ambitious targets for 2030 highlight its leadership in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing sustainable practices across its operations.

(PRESS RELEASE) HERZOGENAURACH, 20-Aug-2024— /EuropaWire/ — Global sportswear giant PUMA has been ranked as one of Europe’s top ten Climate Leaders by the Financial Times, a prestigious acknowledgment of the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. This ranking, which evaluates the climate strategies of 600 European companies, highlights PUMA’s significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing sustainable practices throughout its operations.

The Financial Times’ ranking assesses companies based on their success in reducing direct emissions (Scope 1) and indirect emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2). It also considers a company’s transparency in reporting supply chain emissions (Scope 3) and its collaboration with external organizations such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

PUMA, a consistent presence on the list since its inception in 2021, reached its highest-ever position this year, placing eighth among all companies analyzed. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of PUMA’s sustainability initiatives and its leadership role in the industry’s transition towards a lower carbon footprint.

A Commitment to Long-Term Sustainability Goals

Anne-Laure Descours, Chief Sourcing Officer at PUMA, expressed gratitude for the recognition while emphasizing the ongoing challenges in addressing emissions within the company’s supply chain. “We are honored to be recognized in this esteemed ranking, and I want to commend our global teams for their relentless efforts in driving our sustainability agenda,” she said. “However, we acknowledge that there is still a significant journey ahead, particularly in reducing emissions in our supply chain, where the majority of our environmental impact lies. Achieving our long-term goals will require collaboration and commitment from all stakeholders involved.”

PUMA’s climb in the rankings is largely attributed to the company’s early achievement of its climate goals, reaching its targets seven years ahead of schedule. In response, PUMA has set more ambitious goals, aiming to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% and Scope 3 emissions by 33% by 2030, based on a 2017 baseline. These targets have been validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative, reflecting PUMA’s commitment to aligning its operations with the latest climate science.

Driving Progress Through Innovation and Collaboration

PUMA’s progress in reducing its carbon footprint is driven by several key initiatives. In 2023, the company’s core suppliers significantly increased their use of renewable energy, doubling the amount compared to the previous year. PUMA has also prioritized the use of materials with lower carbon footprints in its products, adopted low-carbon shipment tariffs, and invested in renewable electricity and energy certificates for its operations. Additionally, the company has expanded its fleet of electric vehicles, further contributing to its emission reduction efforts.

This recognition by the Financial Times not only highlights PUMA’s achievements but also reinforces its commitment to leading by example in the fight against climate change. As the company continues to innovate and collaborate with partners across its value chain, it remains focused on delivering sustainable solutions that make a meaningful impact on the environment.
