Public Symposium: The balance between democracy, economic growth, and inclusion policies in Brazil at the Latin American Institute of Freie Universität Berlin on January 30, 2015

BERLIN,  23-1-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — The balance between democracy, economic growth, and inclusion policies in Brazil is the topic of a symposium to be held at the Latin American Institute (LAI) of Freie Universität Berlin on January 30, 2015. The presentations will focus on the social, political, and economic aspects of contemporary Brazil. Particular focus will be placed on the events that shaped the first term of President Dilma Rousseff and her Social Democratic Workers’ Party and the expectations placed on them since their re-election in October 2014. The symposium will be opened by the Brazilian Ambassador to Germany, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, along with Susanne Klengel, the director of LAI, and Lucio Rennó, a visiting professor from Brazil. The event will be held in English. The symposium is open to the public, and admission is free. Advance registration is not required.

The analyses will include a focus on the debate about political reforms in Brazil. The participants will address the relations between state and society and participatory processes in the Brazilian state, for example, the dispute over the environmental policy of the country. Key issues related to inclusion and inequality in Brazil are also on the agenda, whereby the emphasis will be placed on the recent successes of the Brazilian government and the implications for the future.

The event is being sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
