Plenitude Begins Construction on 220 MW Solar Facility in Salamanca, Enhancing Spain’s Renewable Energy Capacity

(IN BRIEF) Plenitude has commenced construction on a 220 MW solar power plant in Villarino de los Aires, Salamanca, which will be one of the largest in the Castilla y León region. The project, expected to produce over 400 GWh annually, will feature 365,300 bifacial solar panels and span 286 hectares. The plant is scheduled for completion in 2025 with the support of Sterling & Wilson and local contractors. Environmental protection measures have been implemented to preserve the surrounding landscape, including collaboration with local farmers. Plenitude, part of Eni Group, continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio across Spain, aiming to boost its capacity to over 8 GW by 2027.

(PRESS RELEASE) SALAMANCA, 18-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a significant step forward for renewable energy in Spain, Plenitude has begun the construction of a 220 MW solar power plant in Villarino de los Aires, Salamanca, marking one of the largest projects of its kind in the Castilla y León region. Expected to generate more than 400 GWh annually, the plant will play a pivotal role in supporting Spain’s clean energy goals.

The launch of construction was formalized today during a cornerstone-laying event, attended by representatives from the Regional Government of Castilla y León, the Villarino de los Aires City Council, and Plenitude. This substantial solar facility, which will span approximately 286 hectares, is poised to become one of the most powerful renewable energy installations in the region. The site will connect to Spain’s national transmission network through a 3.2-kilometer underground medium-voltage line at the Villarino de los Aires junction. In total, 365,300 bifacial solar panels will be installed to achieve an estimated annual electricity production exceeding 400,000 MWh.

The project is slated for completion in 2025, with the collaboration of global photovoltaic construction leader Sterling & Wilson, alongside other prominent local contractors. As part of its commitment to environmental stewardship, Plenitude has implemented several measures to protect the surrounding area. These include preserving and relocating rural structures, safeguarding natural water channels, installing a permeable hunting fence, and working closely with local farmers to ensure the project’s integration with existing land use.

Mariangiola Mollicone, Head of Western Europe Renewables and Managing Director of Plenitude in Spain, expressed the company’s commitment to fostering cooperation with local stakeholders. “The Villarino project exemplifies the harmonious integration of our renewable energy initiatives with the surrounding landscape. Today’s ceremony demonstrates our dedication to maintaining this collaborative approach as we continue to grow our presence in Spain,” Mollicone stated.

This new solar park further solidifies Plenitude’s footprint in Castilla y León, where it already operates a 13 MW wind power facility. Across Spain, the company manages over 440 MW of installed photovoltaic and wind energy capacity, with additional plants located in regions such as Galicia, La Rioja, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Murcia. Currently, Plenitude is constructing projects totaling around 1 GW in Andalusia, Castilla y León, and Extremadura, and has an additional 2 GW of capacity under development.

As part of the Eni Group, Plenitude operates in more than 15 countries worldwide, integrating renewable energy production, electricity sales, and electric vehicle charging solutions. The company currently manages over 3 GW of installed renewable energy capacity and serves 10 million customers across Europe. By 2027, Plenitude aims to expand its client base to 11.5 million, increase renewable capacity to over 8 GW, and operate 40,000 EV charging points.

This solar venture reflects Plenitude’s ongoing commitment to renewable energy expansion and its contribution to Spain’s green energy transition.
