Partners Naviris and SIGEN Strengthen Naval Capabilities with Electronic Warfare System Modernization

(IN BRIEF) Naviris and SIGEN, a consortium of Elettronica and Thales, have signed a sub-contract for the modernization of the Electronic Warfare (EW) system as part of the Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) of the Horizon-class naval units serving the Italian and French navies. The collaboration builds on previous successes in naval programs and aims to deliver advanced EW systems tailored to the specific needs of each navy. This partnership underscores the commitment to enhancing naval capabilities and addressing evolving threats in the electromagnetic spectrum. The upgraded EW system will seamlessly integrate contributions from both companies, strengthening their position in European Defense.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 27-Nov-2023 — /EuropaWire/ —  Thales (EPA: HO), a French multinational company active in the aerospace, defence, transportation and security markets, announces that SIGEN, a consortium formed by Elettronica and Thales and Naviris, a joint venture between Fincantieri and Naval Group, are pleased to announce their collaboration for the modernization of the Electronic Warfare (EW) system as part of the Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) of the four Horizon-class units currently in service with the Italian and French navies.

Building on the success achieved in the Horizon and FREMM programs, this sub-contract solidifies the strong partnership between Naviris and SIGEN in delivering cutting-edge EW systems that effectively address present and future operational requirements. Both companies will make significant contributions to this endeavor, ensuring a balanced and mutually beneficial collaboration.

The upgraded EW system will seamlessly integrate the expertise developed by each company in their respective national naval programs. It will feature the integration of the full digital Radar Electronic Support Measures (RESM) component, previously developed and qualified for the French Navy’s FDI (Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention) program, with the Radar Electronic Counter Measures component from ELT Group, which was developed and qualified for the Italian Navy’s PPA (Patrol Multipurpose Offshore Units) program. Additionally, the Communication Electronic Support Measures and Electronic Warfare Management Unit subsystems will be tailored to meet the specific requirements of each navy.

Domitilla Benigni, CEO and COO of Elettronica, commented,  “The contract for the EWS Mid-Life Upgrading (MLU) of the Horizon Units has a twofold and significant value for our company: on the one hand, we consolidate our presence of excellence in EW on board naval units for the Italian and French Navies and, at the same time, we consolidate the long and fruitful collaboration with Thales. Both aspects consolidate ELT Group’s convinced contribution toward European Defence.”

Philippe Duhamel, Executive Vice-President, Defence Mission Systems, Thales, stated, “We are very proud to reinforce our collaboration and partnership with ELT Group by the provision of our unique Electronic Warfare (EW) system for the Italian and French Navies, taking into account the new and modern stakes and threats of the electromagnetic spectrum.”

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both Naviris and SIGEN to deliver modern, effective, and tailored EW systems that will enhance the capabilities of the Horizon-class units, ultimately contributing to the security and operational readiness of the Italian and French navies.
