Palma Ars Acustica 2016 winner is Anna Raimondo of Belgium for her work “Me, My English and All the Languages of My Life”

The jury of the Palma Ars Acustica, chaired by Eoin O’Kelly of RTÉ, has announced that the 2016 winner is Anna Raimondo of Belgium for her work “Me, My English and All the Languages of My Life”.

BRUSSELS, 14-Jun-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — The work was presented by EBU Member RTBF/Musiq’3. The artist will receive her award in Brussels on 17 November during the Festival Ars Musica.

The finals of this annual competition took place in conjunction with the meeting of the Euroradio Ars Acustica Group (Marcus Gammel (ARD/DKU), Chair, and Elisabeth Zimmermann (ORF), Vice-Chair), held in Galway (Ireland) on 11-12 June at the kind invitation of RTÉ and the Head of its lyric fm station, Aodán Ó Dubhghaill.

In its statement, the jury noted: “Anna Raimondo’s radio piece ‘Me, My English and All the Languages of My Life’ is a playful exploration of accents as a vehicle for sonic identity. The jury appreciated the intricate formal structure of the work and the natural cadences of human voices in a careful mixture of autobiographical and compositional constructs. While sporting a humorous tone, the piece offers a starting point for a deep reflection on the production of sound and meaning. Over recent years, Anna Raimondo has emerged as an inspiring talent in the world of radio art, developing her own artistic exploration of the interplay between sound and language on air – a wonderfully engaging listen from start to finish.”

Anna Raimondo was born in Italy and currently lives in Brussels. Her works, which can be classified somewhere between sound and radio art, installation and urban intervention, are broadcast internationally by such stations as Deutschlandradio Kultur, Arte Radio and RAI.

In her prize-winning piece, Anna Raimondo reflects on her relationships with the different languages of her life – Italian, Spanish, French and English – after living, travelling and working around the world. She also attends a phonetic course to learn how to speak with a British accent. Caught between ridicule and seriousness, hesitation and encouragement, Anna’s exploration invites listeners into a sonic soup of lingue / idiomas / langues / languages.

“Me, My English and All the Languages of My Life” is a coproduction with the Atelier de création sonore et radiophonique in Belgium, as part of the Empreinte Project. More information is available in the MUS offer AA/16/04/03/03.

The Palma Ars Acustica is an international competition organized by the Euroradio Ars Acustica Group to promote and honour outstanding productions of radio art, sound art, media art, text sound compositions, electroacoustic music, electronics and live electronica.
