ORLEN Joins Cross-Border Initiative to Advance Baltic Energy Infrastructure and Security

(IN BRIEF) ORLEN has joined 13 energy companies and organisations from nine Northern and Central European countries to establish the Baltic Energy Initiative, a platform for cooperation on energy security, competitiveness and cross-border energy transition projects. The 14 partners will focus on offshore wind, LNG and bioLNG, hydrogen, CCS, nuclear power and SMRs, while also cooperating on EU and international funding opportunities. The initiative will address critical infrastructure protection, cybersecurity and resilience against physical and hybrid threats, and will provide a forum for developing common positions on regulation, investment and support mechanisms. For ORLEN, the alliance supports areas in which the Group is already expanding its capabilities, including offshore wind, LNG, hydrogen, carbon capture and nuclear energy.

(PRESS RELEASE) PŁOCK, 4-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — ORLEN has joined 13 energy companies and organisations from Northern and Central Europe to establish the Baltic Energy Initiative, a new regional cooperation platform focused on strengthening energy security, accelerating energy transition projects and improving the competitiveness of the Baltic Sea region.

The initiative brings together 14 organisations from Poland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Norway.

Alongside ORLEN, the signatories are Eesti Energia, Enefit, Fortum, KN Energies, DNV Energy Systems, Topsoe, Siemens Energy, Adven, Steady Energy, P2X Solutions, Latvenergo, Gasgrid Finland and Ørsted.

The partners plan to cooperate across areas including offshore wind, LNG and bioLNG, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage (CCS), nuclear power and small modular reactors (SMRs).

Regional partnership targets energy security and competitiveness

Ireneusz Fąfara, CEO and President of the Management Board of ORLEN, said the scale of the challenges facing Europe’s energy sector requires greater cooperation between countries and companies.

He said the Baltic Energy Initiative will give participating organisations an opportunity both to take part in major energy transition projects and to help influence how those projects develop.

By combining expertise, infrastructure and investment capabilities, the partners aim to strengthen regional energy security, improve access to available financing and increase the competitiveness of the Baltic Sea region.

Cooperation across offshore wind, LNG, hydrogen, CCS and nuclear

The Baltic Energy Initiative will provide a platform for sharing expertise and experience and for identifying opportunities to develop projects with an international and cross-border dimension.

Priority areas include the further development of offshore wind, closer integration of regional LNG and bioLNG markets, creation of a regional hydrogen market, development of carbon transport and storage infrastructure, and deployment of small modular reactor technology.

The partners will also explore opportunities to obtain financing from European Union programmes and other international funding sources.

For ORLEN, the initiative is expected to support partnerships in several areas central to the Group’s transformation strategy.

These include offshore wind, LNG, hydrogen, CCS and nuclear energy, where ORLEN is developing its own assets and capabilities.

Cooperation through the initiative could also support knowledge sharing, cross-border project development and common recommendations concerning regulation and financial support mechanisms.

Critical energy infrastructure protection becomes key priority

Protecting energy infrastructure will form another major area of cooperation.

Participants plan to exchange experience in critical infrastructure protection, cybersecurity, emergency preparedness and responses to physical and hybrid threats.

The partners will jointly evaluate projects capable of improving the resilience of regional energy infrastructure and examine possible sources of financing for such investments.

The initiative reflects the growing importance of infrastructure security as European energy systems become more interconnected and increasingly dependent on cross-border assets and networks.

Baltic energy companies seek stronger voice in Europe

The Baltic Energy Initiative is also intended to strengthen the region’s representation in discussions with European institutions.

Participants will use the platform to develop common positions and recommendations on regulatory frameworks, investment conditions and support mechanisms for strategic energy projects.

By coordinating their positions, the partners aim to communicate the Baltic Sea region’s energy needs more effectively and support investment capable of unlocking additional regional energy potential.

For ORLEN, participation will also provide an opportunity to contribute to the development of solutions that could benefit the wider European energy market while supporting the Group’s own transformation and investment programme.
