The telecom to roll out Montblanc’s luxury smartwatch first in Europe

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 12-Mar-2020 — /EuropaWire/ — Leading telecommunications operator Orange has announced it has been chosen by Hamburg based luxury goods maker Montblanc first to launch their newest smartwatch Summit 2+ in Europe. Montblanc’s luxury device is in fact the first smartwatch with an eSIM solution from Wear OS by Google™. The Orange and Montblanc partnership sees Orange as the first operator globally to remotely connect eSIM with On Device Service Activation on Wear OS by Google.

This represents yet another milestone for Orange in driving the adoption of eSIM connectivity and put together with Wear OS by Google enabling a standard GSMA implementation. It is seen as a catalyst to extend remote activation and cellular connectivity on further smartwatch categories.

The roll out plan is for the Montblanc Summit 2+ eSIM smartwatch to be introduced in France and Spain by 2Q-2020 as the first countries across Europe.

The French telecom will continue its support for the multiSIM approach, which enables customers to keep the same mobile number on their both smartphone and smartwatch and allows them to share their data allowance across the two devices in a single bill.

The Summit 2+ eSIM smartwatch, once connected to the Orange’s network, will be able to operate autonomously from the smartphone.

The smartwatch by Montblanc is meant for both men and women and it blends the company’s fine watchmaking heritage and design with the latest in mobile technology to deliver a rich customer experience.

Technically, the new smartwatch will be capable of making calls, sending and receiving text messages using voice dictation on the watch itself and all this without a tethered connection to a smartphone. Users will also be able to receive notifications from social networks and other smartphone apps as well.

Fully packed with features like GPS to track speed and location and backed up by a battery power of 440mAh, which can be extended by using time-only modes and battery savers. Furthermore, the Montblanc’s Summit 2+ eSIM smartwatch will also rely on the latest in processing power with the Qualcomm® Snapdragon Wear™ 3100 Platform – the first smartwatch enabling cellular connectivity to feature this platform. As expected, the luxury smartwatch will also feature plenty of fitness features including activity monitoring, calories, distance, heart rate monitoring among many others including some Montblanc proprietary applications.

Philippe Lucas, Senior VP, Customer Equipment and Partnerships at Orange on partnering with Montblanc:

“These are exciting times to be partnering with Montblanc to deliver this stand-out smartwatch first in Europe. The launch of the Summit 2+ represents a key step on our journey to grow connectivity in the wearables market place, as Orange builds on its established leadership in eSIM and network services. With the smartwatch’s high-end design and craftsmanship and state-of-the art network technology we are re-inventing the customer experience with a fully digitalised journey.”
