NWO: This year’s ‘Physics with Industry’ workshop will be held in Lorentz Center in Leiden from 26 to 30 November 2018

The HAGUE, 17-Apr-2018 — /EuropaWire/ — Companies and social organizations are invited to submit a real-world problem for consideration by the annual Physics with Industry workshop before 1 June 2018.

This year’s ‘Physics with Industry‘ workshop will be held from 26 to 30 November 2018 in the Lorentz Center in Leiden. During the workshop about fifty fundamental and experimental physicists will work on five selected real-world business problems.

The workshop is intended to strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange between the academic world and the business community. In the inspiring environment of the Lorentz Center in Leiden, researchers from knowledge institutes and business representatives will work together for a week to find original solutions to challenging industrial problems.

Companies and social organisations

The Physics with Industry workshop gives businesses and social organisations a unique opportunity to acquire new insights, find solutions to existing problems, expand their academic network and get in touch with young researchers. The workshop is organised jointly by NWO and the Lorentz Center.

Why should you take part?

The workshop week focuses on five real-world business cases. Physicists from a variety of fields apply their academic knowledge to find (often surprising) solutions to the problems presented in these cases. In the process these researchers get closely acquainted with the companies themselves, and vice versa. The workshop yields interesting results for the companies, but also allows them to meet possible future employees.

The first Physics with Industry workshop was held in 2010. Since then a wide range of large and small companies have taken part. In recent years the workshops have led not only to solutions to the problems presented, but also to new joint projects, patent applications and employment engagements for the participating researchers.

Problem selection

A programme committee will select the most suitable five of the submitted cases. The committee’s four selection criteria are as follows:

  1. Is the case an urgent problem?
  2. Is it a scientifically challenging problem with a relevant physics question?
  3. Could a solution (or solution direction) be found within a week?
  4. Will the company be delivering enough input during the workshop to allow the development of an applicable result?

The organisation strives to select a mix of contributions from large, small and medium-sized businesses and social organisations.
