the HAGUE, 05-Sep-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — On 20-24 November 2017, NWO and the Lorentz Center organise the 8th edition of the workshop Physics with Industry. The aim of this workshop is for young physicists to create original solutions for industrial problems, for them to get introduced to industrial R&D and for companies to get in touch with young talents. Participants of the workshop are physicists from academia in the Netherlands and Europe, and researchers of the participating companies. They will work in teams with each team focusing on one of the selected industrial cases. The majority of the participants are PhD students or postdocs. The scientists are supported by senior researchers, to ensure progress and the highest scientific quality.
Registration is open
Researchers can register as from this week for the workshop Physics with Industry. Please visit the website of the Lorentz Center to register. The registration deadline is 2 October 2017, at 2pm. Participation is free of charge. In return, this requires full attendence to the whole workshop.
The following five companies/organisations take part in Physics with Industry 2017:
- National Data Warehouse for Traffic Information (NDW)
- Koppert Biological Systems
- Sioux CCM
The five cases are available on the website of the Lorentz Center.

- Monday2 October 2017, 14:00 / 2pm Deadline registration for participants
- Friday 17 November 2017 Company visit
- 20 t/m 24 November 2017 Physics with Industry Workshop
Participants can indicate their preference for a case during registration. Before the start of the workshop the PWI orgaisation assign each participant to one case, so that in the end five teams are formed consisting of approx. 10 people (including the company representatives and the sr scientist). The participants may receive relevant literature and other documents, so that they can begin with the workshop with relevant background knowledge. On 17 November a company visit takes place. At the start of the workshop, participants are requested to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
On the website of the Lorentz Center you can find an impression of the previous PWI edition (2016) with the cases back then. The reports of Physics with Industry 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 are available as pdf-file:

Experiences from companies participating in previous PWI editions:
“Physics with Industry was a real inspirational event for us. Bringing together young researchers from different fields of research and more experienced researchers from universities and industrial R&D was the best you can expect for working on your very specific subject. It helped us a lot to understand the limits of our approach of the problem, but also the good choices we made in treating the subject. Physics with Industry was for me a place where the fundamental research met the industrial application within a framework where the innovation was at home.”
