(PRESS RELEASE) BERLIN, 6-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — The nomination phase for the Axel Springer Prize, one of the most important awards for young journalists in the German-speaking region, is now officially open. With the prestigious prize, being bestowed for the 33rd time, the Axel Springer Academy of Journalism and Technology is honoring the best up-and-coming talents in the field. All editors-in-chief and heads of department as well as heads of journalism schools can submit their nominations for the best German-language contributions of 2023.

The prize is awarded in the categories “Politics and Business”, “Entertainment” and “Best Team Performance”. Additionally, this year sees two new categories “Analysis and Background” and “Future” awarded for the first time. In this category, the prize awards contributions that deal with the current developments and the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in content or have been produced innovatively with the help of AI.

Miriam Krekel, Head of the journalism school at the Axel Springer Academy of Journalism and Technology said, “We are once again looking forward to honoring great talents and unique creative pieces of work with the Axel Springer Prize for Young Journalism this year. Our new categories ‘Future’ and ‘Analysis and Background’ strengthen both AI-supported independent journalism as well as credibility and in-depth research. I’m already looking forward to the contributions.”

Another feature is live voting by the audience during the award ceremony following a preliminary selection by the expert jury, this time choosing the winner in the “Entertainment” category. As in the previous year, the public will also be asked to submit nominations in the award category “Best Team Performance” of the year. This is aimed not only at articles, but also at innovative journalistic projects and products that were created collaboratively.

Winning unique journalistic experiences
Winners can look forward to a special journalistic opportunity, as every awardee will have the chance to travel to editorial offices of Axel Springer – including POLITICO in Washington and Brussels, BUSINESS INSIDER, WELT or BILD – thus gaining valuable insights into editorial processes and best practices, while expanding their own networks.

Once again awarded will be the George Weidenfeld Prize for courageous reporting which is bestowed out of competition and endowed with 10,000 euros.

Nomination conditions
To qualify for nomination, works must be articles in the German language written by trainees, editors or freelancers who were not older than 33 years at the time of publication. This age limit also applies to all main contributors to team projects.
