Successfully completes rigorous checks of LTE voice services using a virtualized Telco Cloud core network

06-8-2013 — /EuropaWire/ — Extremely comprehensive testing of mobile voice core services running in the Telco Cloud shows that Nokia Siemens Networks cloud technology is on the brink of commercial deployment. The company successfully demonstrated an exhaustive set of use cases covering Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and other IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based services in the Telco Cloud.

During 2012, Nokia Siemens Networks demonstrated the reliability of core virtualization in several “proof of concept” projects. These projects provided the technology foundation for core network element software running on top of a virtualized infrastructure. In addition, the projects helped identify telco-specific requirements for cloud computing.

Nokia Siemens Networks has now carried out further testing to verify end-to-end VoLTE deployment readiness in a Telco Cloud. The test program tackled current deployment barriers by implementing comprehensive end-to-end verification of VoLTE call cases to ensure feature parity with customers’ current 2G/3G circuit-switched voice services, Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) functionality, and the reuse of existing billing, lawful interception and intelligent network interfaces.

Using an industry-standard virtualization and cloud management infrastructure as well as commercial off-the-shelf IT server hardware, the test program for Telco Cloud deployment verified the automated deployment and elastic scaling of virtualized network elements, live migration of virtual machines from one server to another, and the recovery from hardware failures. All the cloud test cases were enabled and supported by the existing Nokia Siemens Networks Operations Support Systems (OSS) portfolio and a cloud application management system which controls the VoLTE core applications in an operator’s private Telco Cloud.

“The range of test cases we ran during the pre-deployment verification phase underlines the essential role of the OSS components in the Telco Cloud,” said Peter Patomella, vice president, Operations Support Systems at Nokia Siemens Networks. “We’ve shown how the complete lifecycle of a network element can be managed remotely via our OSS – including initial network element cloud deployment, monitoring of virtualized VoLTE application resources, and elasticity management.”

Nokia Siemens Networks has worked closely with major operators and technology partners to define the use cases of the test and verification program in order to ensure robustness and carrier-grade availability of real-time mobile core applications deployed in a Telco Cloud data center.

“Nokia Siemens Networks has achieved an important milestone in making the Telco Cloud a commercial reality for mobile broadband operators,” said Michael Clever, vice president, Voice and IP Transformation at Nokia Siemens Networks. “We are strongly committed to bringing our core network solutions to life in the Telco Cloud.”

Nokia Siemens Networks will continue to build on its experience and leadership position in Telco Cloud VoLTE projects as well as in Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and register domains, targeting robustness of the 4G core in both traditional and Telco Cloud deployments.
