NIB: Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) present “Nordic Action on Climate Change” ahead of COP21

In preparation for COP21, the Paris Meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) has collected data on the Nordic countries’ performance in dealing with the environmental challenge.

HELSINKI, 7-12-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — In the booklet “Nordic Action on Climate Change”, the NCM presents national policies and climate targets, statistical information and industry cases from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the autonomous regions of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. In a special chapter, the publication summarises the activities of the Nordic Financial Group, which includes NIB and its sister organisations, the Nordic Development Fund and the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation—NEFCO.

“This is an effort to illustrate action taken by the Nordic countries to speed up the transition towards a sustainable low-carbon society. We want to prove that sustainable development is possible, with strong climate policies contributing to economic growth and job creation as well as environmental improvements”, says Peer Stiansen, Chair of the Nordic Working Group for Global Climate Negotiations.

In late October, at the annual Nordic Council’s session in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik, the Nordic environment ministers signed a common declaration to confirm the commitment of their countries to reach an ambitious, global and legally binding agreement at COP21 that will keep the global temperature rise well below two degrees.

The ministers underlined that “the Nordic countries support a global, scientifically based emissions reduction goal in the agreement that provides direction for future action and certainty to investors.”

“The Nordic countries stay committed to transforming our societies towards highly energy-efficient, low-carbon and climate-resilient economies. The Nordic experience shows that effective mitigation actions can be achieved without compromising economic growth and social development”, the ministers said.

The Nordic countries will have a shared pavilion at COP21 and the Nordic Council of Ministers will organise a series of events under the heading New Nordic Climate Solutions.
