New Milestone for New York’s Rail Infrastructure: Webuild’s Lane Secures $466 Million Contract for Palisades Tunnels Project

(IN BRIEF) Lane, the U.S. subsidiary of the Webuild Group, has secured a $466 million contract to construct two twin tunnels in New Jersey as part of the Hudson River Tunnel Project. These tunnels, which will enhance New York City’s rail connections, are a key component of a broader infrastructure initiative aimed at improving transportation between New York and New Jersey. The project involves the use of large tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) and is expected to be completed by 2027. This contract highlights Webuild’s global expertise in underground excavation, adding to its portfolio of significant tunneling projects worldwide.

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 23-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Lane, the U.S. subsidiary of the global infrastructure giant Webuild Group, has been awarded a significant $466 million (€427 million) contract to construct two new twin tunnels in New Jersey, part of the ambitious Hudson River Tunnel Project aimed at enhancing New York City’s rail connections. Lane’s share in this contract amounts to 35%, underscoring the company’s leading role in this critical infrastructure development.

The project, known as the Palisades Tunnel, is a key component of the broader Hudson Tunnel Project, an investment designed to boost the efficiency and capacity of the region’s transportation network by constructing a new tunnel between New York and New Jersey and rehabilitating the existing, over 114-year-old rail tunnel. This contract represents the first tunnel awarded by the Gateway Development Commission (GDC) under this initiative.

The Palisades Tunnel project, also referred to as “Package 1A Palisades Tunnel Project,” involves the design and construction of two twin rail tunnels, each approximately 1.6 kilometers long with an internal diameter of about 8 meters. The excavation will be carried out using two massive tunnel-boring machines (TBMs), demonstrating Lane’s expertise in advanced tunneling technology.

In addition to the tunnel construction, the contract includes the development of the tunnel’s western portal near Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen, six cross-connect tunnels, and a 36-meter-deep, 37-meter-wide shaft in Hoboken, Hudson County. This shaft will serve as the extraction point for the TBMs once the excavation is completed. The project is expected to be completed by 2027, in collaboration with Schiavone and Dragados.

Webuild Group, renowned for its underground excavation expertise, has a rich history of over 3,400 kilometers of tunnel construction globally. Notable projects include the “Intake 3 project” beneath Lake Mead near Las Vegas, where the Group constructed a record-breaking hydraulic tunnel to secure water supplies for the region. Webuild is also advancing the Snowy 2.0 hydropower project in Australia and working on the Brenner Base Tunnel beneath the Alps, which will become the world’s longest underground railway tunnel upon completion.

This new contract for the Palisades Tunnel further cements Webuild and Lane’s leadership in the global infrastructure sector and their commitment to transforming vital transportation networks.
