New Methanol Logistics Route Supports Evonik’s Long-Term MetAMINO® Production Strategy

(IN BRIEF) Evonik has launched a new methanol pipeline linking Lülsdorf and Wesseling in Germany to secure long-term raw-material supply for its methionine production network in Europe. Developed with Lülsdorf Functional Solutions, Röhm and SYNEQT Pipelines, the project combines shared regional logistics infrastructure with a new direct transport route for imported methanol. Methanol supplied to Wesseling is used to produce MMP, a key precursor for MetAMINO® DL-methionine made at Evonik’s Antwerp facility. Evonik said the new arrangement will use natural-gas-based methanol with a carbon footprint around 70% lower than the crude-oil-based methanol previously used. The project also supports future access to green methanol and is intended to improve supply reliability, lower Scope 3 emissions and strengthen Evonik’s Animal Nutrition operations.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 23-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Evonik has commissioned a new methanol pipeline between Lülsdorf and Wesseling in Germany, strengthening long-term supply security for a key raw material used in its European methionine production network.

The project was delivered with Lülsdorf Functional Solutions GmbH, Röhm GmbH and infrastructure specialist SYNEQT Pipelines. It combines existing regional logistics and storage assets with a newly built long-distance pipeline, which entered operation in June 2026.

Evonik invested a high single-digit-million-euro amount in the project. The new infrastructure allows methanol imported through Lülsdorf to be transported directly to Evonik’s Wesseling site, creating a more reliable and competitive supply route for both Evonik and Röhm.

At Wesseling, Evonik uses methanol to produce methylmercaptopropionaldehyde, or MMP, a precursor required for the manufacture of MetAMINO® DL-methionine at the company’s Antwerp site in Belgium.

The pipeline project supports Evonik’s Animal Nutrition business line and its strategy of maintaining dependable raw-material supply across three global methionine production hubs. Methionine is used in livestock production to support efficient and balanced animal nutrition.

Norbert Steier, Head of Production and Technology for Evonik’s Animal Nutrition business line, said the project strengthens long-term methanol availability for the Wesseling facility while also reducing Scope 3 emissions and creating the possibility of sourcing green methanol in the future.

Evonik said it will use methanol produced from natural gas under the new arrangement. The company expects the carbon footprint of this methanol to be around 70% lower than that of the crude-oil-based methanol previously used at the site.

The location of the new pipeline near major industrial and logistics infrastructure is intended to improve the resilience of Evonik’s regional supply chain. Shared infrastructure and direct transport are also expected to reduce handling requirements compared with previous supply arrangements.

The investment reflects Evonik’s broader effort to combine reliable raw-material access with lower-carbon input materials for its specialist chemical production operations.

Through the new Lülsdorf–Wesseling connection, Evonik is reinforcing the supply base for its European methionine network while supporting lower-emission production and future options for renewable methanol procurement.
