(PRESS RELEASE) BRUSSELS, 22-Jan-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), the main lobbying and standards group of the automobile industry in the European Union, has announced the appointment of Domenico Nucera, President of the Bus Business Unit at Iveco Group, as the Chairperson of its bus and coach division. Nucera’s selection comes at a critical juncture for the industry as it grapples with ambitious decarbonization goals set by the European Union. While the EU has outlined these objectives, Nucera points out that the real challenge lies in creating the necessary conditions for implementation. He stressed that bus and coach manufacturers are actively working on cleaner and more sustainable models to reduce CO2 emissions from road transport. However, they cannot tackle these challenges in isolation.

Nucera highlighted the importance of collaboration across various stakeholders, including policymakers, transport operators, electric charging and hydrogen refilling infrastructure providers, and others. This collective effort is essential for achieving rapid decarbonization in heavy-duty transport. Buses play a crucial role in the European Union, representing over half of all public transport journeys and having the lowest carbon footprint among motorized transport options. With more than 700,000 buses currently on EU roads, they are a cornerstone of mobility for Europeans.

Nucera also emphasized the need for policymakers to maintain focus on ensuring the competitiveness of this vital sector, especially in light of growing competition from other global regions. ACEA’s bus and coach division unites Europe’s five major bus and coach manufacturers: Daimler Truck, Iveco Group, MAN, Scania, and Volvo Group. Domenico Nucera’s appointment comes for a one-year term, succeeding Anna Westerberg, President of Volvo Buses, and underscores the industry’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and advancing sustainable transport solutions.
