Neste Oil to introduce consumer packs of AdBlue, a solution used as diesel exhaust fluid for reducing nitrous oxide emissions

Espoo, Finland, 9-10-2014 — /EuropaWire/ —  Neste Oil will introduce consumer packs of AdBlue – an aqueous urea solution used as a diesel exhaust fluid for reducing nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions – in October, to provide the product across whole Finland via largest service station network in the country. The new 1.89-liter packs will make it easy to use AdBlue in diesel cars. Up until now, AdBlue has only been sold in bulk and larger packs for heavy vehicles.

Under new Euro VI tailpipe emission regulations, all new cars type-approved after 1 September 2014 must comply with stricter tailpipe emission limits, which will apply to new cars registered and sold from fall 2015 onwards.

In the case of diesel vehicles, this will see the spread of AdBlue usage in medium-sized and large diesel cars and vans fitted with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) units. The catalyst in SCR units uses AdBlue to reduce NOx content by converting the nitrous oxides in exhaust into nitrogen and water. The SCR system needs the urea solution to operate and, if the solution is not added, will limit engine performance.

AdBlue has been used, in combination with SCR, by trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles for many years. The new 1.89-liter packs for consumers will be added to the product range on sale at Neste Oil’s service stations in Finland and via distributors in October.

What is AdBlue?
AdBlue is the commercial name for an aqueous solution of urea and demineralized water containing 32.5% urea.

Why is AdBlue used?
Using AdBlue reduces a diesel vehicle’s NOx emissions.

Is AdBlue a fuel additive?
No. Vehicles equipped to use AdBlue have a separate tank for it.

Which vehicles should use AdBlue?
AdBlue is intended for new diesel vehicles fitted with SCR.

How does SCR work?
SCR – or Selective Catalytic Reduction – uses a catalyst to convert NOx into nitrogen and water. AdBlue is required for the catalyst to work and is injected into a vehicle’s exhaust before it enters a SCR unit.

How much AdBlue is needed?
1-2 liters of AdBlue per 1,000 kilometers for a diesel car. A gauge on the dashboard shows when a vehicle is running low.

How do you fill up with AdBlue?
AdBlue is contained in a separate tank on board vehicles. The filling point is typically located next to a vehicle’s fuel tank cap. If a vehicle does not have a separate tank for AdBlue, it is not needed.

How should AdBlue be stored?
AdBlue should be stored inside and away from direct sunlight at below 25 °C. It will freeze at -11 °C.

How long can AdBlue be stored for?
It will remain fit for use for 18 months from the date it was packed, as displayed on the container.
