National Grid to begin second phase of gas mains replacement work in King’s Road, London

  • First phase of work completed successfully
  • Next phase of essential work to maintain safe and reliable gas supplies due to start on Thursday 28 April
  • Road and bus route diversions needed but local businesses and shops will remain open as normal throughout work

LONDON, 28-Apr-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — National Grid is about to embark on the second phase of essential gas mains replacement work in King’s Road.

The project involves replacing ageing metal gas mains with tough new pipes. The first phase of the scheme has been successfully completed on schedule and phase two of the project is due to begin on Thursday 28 April.

To enable the work to be carried out safely and efficiently King’s Road will be made into a one-way road eastbound, between Stanley Bridge and Edith Grove.  There will also be changes to some bus routes. Some bus stops will be temporarily closed with convenient alternative stops provided.

Work will also be carried out on the footpaths on Stanley Bridge but a clear, signed, safe route will be kept open for pedestrians.

Throughout the work all shops and businesses will be open as usual and access will be maintained for residents, businesses and deliveries at all times.

National Grid Engineering Manager Stuart Donaldson said: “National Grid has co-ordinated this work with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and Transport for London to ensure it has as little impact on residents, businesses and road users as possible.

“We’ve worked together to carefully plan the work and are meeting regularly with Councillors, businesses and residents.”

He added: “It’s important that we replace and upgrade these ageing gas mains so National Grid can continue to supply local people with safe and reliable energy supplies for cooking and heating.”

National Grid is using innovative technology to insert the new pipes into the old mains wherever possible. This reduces the need for digging and means the work is carried out faster.

The local community are being kept informed and local residents and businesses have been sent letters.
