National Grid Launches Consultation on Community Funding Across London and Hertfordshire

(IN BRIEF) National Grid has launched a six-week consultation to help shape the North London Reinforcement Community Fund, which will make more than £3.5 million available to communities across London and Hertfordshire. Residents, businesses and community organisations are being invited to identify local priorities, with potential funding areas including community facilities, green spaces, skills and employment, and physical and mental wellbeing. The fund will consist of a local element linked to substations in Pelham and Waltham Cross and a strategic fund supporting wider regional priorities, with National Grid aiming to create lasting benefits alongside its electricity transmission infrastructure investment.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 3-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — National Grid has launched a six-week survey inviting residents, businesses, community groups and local organisations to help determine how more than £3.5 million in community funding should be used across London and Hertfordshire.

The consultation will help shape the priorities and delivery of the North London Reinforcement Community Fund, with National Grid seeking local input to ensure investment reflects community needs and ambitions.

The fund has been developed in line with UK Government guidance on community benefits associated with electricity transmission infrastructure.

Potential areas of support include improvements to community facilities and green spaces, skills and employment initiatives, and projects focused on physical and mental wellbeing.

Community input to guide funding priorities

Karthik Ravikumar, Project Director for North London Reinforcement, said the wider infrastructure project will play an important role in strengthening the electricity network and supporting the UK’s transition to cleaner, more secure and domestically produced energy.

He said the survey is intended to ensure that communities, businesses and local organisations can identify the issues and opportunities that matter most to them.

National Grid said the consultation forms part of its commitment to delivering lasting community benefits alongside the North London Reinforcement project.

Emma Turner, Head of Socioeconomic and Community Benefits, said the fund represents a significant opportunity to create a positive legacy for communities hosting the infrastructure.

She said the more than £3.5 million available could support projects ranging from improved community spaces and facilities to initiatives designed to strengthen communities over the longer term.

Fund to be delivered through local and strategic elements

The Community Fund will be structured in two parts.

A local fund linked to substations at Pelham and Waltham Cross will provide grants for local projects and causes.

A separate strategic fund will support broader regional priorities.

National Grid said this two-part approach is intended to ensure funding decisions reflect local feedback while maintaining transparent decision-making and independent oversight over how money is allocated.

The survey follows earlier engagement with stakeholders and communities, including workshops with local organisations and community representatives.

These discussions were designed to build a clearer understanding of local priorities, needs and opportunities before the fund is implemented.
