Morrisons confirms sponsorship of the Special Olympics 2013 National Games in Bath, UK

24-6-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — Special Olympics GB is delighted to announce that Morrisons has confirmed its sponsorship of the Special Olympics 2013 National Games in Bath this summer.

The sponsorship deal will involve Morrisons providing and distributing the 9,000 packed lunches that will be required by the Special Olympics athletes, coaches and Games volunteers during the three days of competition.

“We have received great support for the National Summer Games from the local community in Bath and Bristol and are thrilled that Morrisons is so generously supporting the efforts of our Special Olympics athletes,” said Karen Wallin, Chief Executive Special Olympics GB. “We hold our National Summer Games every four years and this year almost 1,700 athletes, 500 coaches and 500 Games volunteers will be descending onto the University of Bath campus and off-site locations in Bristol. Making sure that they all keep their energy levels up during the Games is tremendously important and Morrisons will be making sure that they receive a healthy and nutritious lunch.”

The Special Olympics athletes, all with intellectual disabilities, will be competing in 12 sporting disciplines during the Games which will commence with the Opening Ceremony on 28 August at The Royal Crescent, Bath. “I would encourage anyone in the area over the following three days to come along and experience for themselves the courage, determination and joy of our athletes as they compete fiercely to be the best they can,” said Karen.

Martyn Jones, Morrisons Group Corporate Services Director, said: “We are proud to support such an important event in the Olympic calendar. We’ll deliver Morrisons products, from our NuMe healthy eating range, and fresh fruit from our own supply chain, to give the Special Olympics athletes the energy they need to compete.”

The National Summer Games are particularly important for those athletes hoping to represent Special Olympics Great Britain at the 2014 European Summer Games in Antwerp and the 2015 World Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Special Olympics GB provides year round sports coaching and competition for people of all ages with intellectual disabilities and relies on the generosity of sponsorship and donations to fund its activities and around 4,000 volunteers to deliver its programmes.
