Mercedes-Benz Travego sets new standards in safety technology; the first bus in the world to use new Active Brake Assist 3

It is something of a tradition: every generation of the Mercedes-Benz Travego high-decker touring coach sets new standards in safety technology. And once again the Travego has the edge on its competitors: it is the first bus in the world to be available with the new Active Brake Assist 3. The preceding generation, Active Brake Assist 2, was already able to initiate braking action when the danger of a collision with slower vehicles ahead or stationary obstacles arose. The new ABA 3 can do even more: it is able to initiate automatic emergency braking when stationary obstacles are encountered.

ABA 3 can actively prevent accidents

This means that the Travego with ABA 3 not only mitigates the consequences of a serious accident, but can also autonomously prevent accidents within the physical limits. Mercedes-Benz includes the new Active Brake Assist 3 in the Travego as standard if the customer orders adaptive cruise control.

Standard equipment in conjunction with adaptive cruise control

Adaptive cruise control is the precondition for Active Brake Assist 3. This relieves the driver’s workload on highways and motorways. When adaptive cruise control detects a slower vehicle travelling ahead, it automatically brakes the coach until a speed-dependent distance preset by the driver has been reached. The system then constantly maintains this distance. To this end a radar sensor constantly scans the road ahead of the coach. It measures the distance and relative speed of vehicles ahead, and also registers any obstacles.

Travego: a tradition of the best possible safety

Numerous safety systems have celebrated their world premiere in the Mercedes-Benz Travego. In 1999, the very first Travego already distinguished itself versus the competition with e.g. an electronic braking system, disc brakes all-round and particularly powerful xenon headlamps.

In 2002 the Travego was the first bus with the Electronic Stability Program ESP, which already became standard in 2003. In 2004, in the Travego, Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to present the three new assistance systems adaptive cruise control, Lane Keeping Assist and the Continuous Braking Limiter.

In 2008 this was followed by the first generation of Active Brake Assist and the patented passive safety system Front Collision Guard (FCG). In 2012 Active Brake Assist 2 with extended functions and Attention Assist (drowsiness warning for the driver) were introduced. With Active Brake Assist 3, the 2014 Travego now presents a further world premiere in the bus sector.
