Marel: PicknPack consortium to develop flexible robotic systems for automated adaptive packaging of fresh and processed food products

Gardabaer, Iceland, 24-May-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — Marel is proud to be a part of PicknPack, a consortium of companies and organizations using their combined expertise to develop flexible robotic systems for automated adaptive packaging of fresh and processes food products.

THE PROJECT’S AIM

PicknPack aims to give the European food industry a vital competitive advantage in the rapidly changing marketplace of the future, where customers demand higher quality, more choice and increased safety for lower prices.
THE PROJECT’S VISION

The project will develop three types of modules which will work closely together and will be able to cope with the typical variability of food products and the requirements of the sector regarding hygiene, economics and adaptability:

  • FOOD QUALITY INSPECTION
A sensing module that assesses quality of individual or small batch products before or after packaging.
  • ROBOTIC FOOD HANDLING
A vision controlled robotic handling module that picks up and separates the product from a harvest bin or transport system and places it in the right position in a package.
  • ADAPTIVE PACKAGING
An adaptive packaging module that can accommodate various types of packaging with flexibility in terms of package shape, size, product environment, sealing, and printing.

PARTICIPANTS

The PicknPack consortium combines the expertise of industry professionals from across Europe and in all related fields. See a full list of participants here.
SHARING THE RESULTS

PicknPack will present the final results of this project at a workshop from 26-27 May 2016, in the Netherlands.

The workshop will be organized around a working production line demonstrator which will illustrate the innovative technology developed and show the complete solution provided by this project.

This demonstrator will be supported by a range of specialist technology booths, each of which will focus on specific aspects, including robotics, instrumentation, wireless communication, data architectures and system control and RFID procedures for product traceability.
