MAPFRE Surpasses Carbon Reduction Goals and Scales Up Global Offsets to Combat Climate Change

(IN BRIEF) MAPFRE has made significant strides toward its climate goals, cutting its operational carbon footprint by 25% in 2024—far exceeding its annual reduction target. Through a wide array of global offset projects, the company neutralized 80% of its footprint by supporting forest preservation, regenerative agriculture, and renewable energy efforts. Key initiatives include the Envira Amazonia project in Brazil, which alone accounted for 30,881 tons of carbon offsets, and other impactful programs in Peru, Portugal, Turkey, and across Europe. These actions align with MAPFRE’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 10-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — MAPFRE has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting climate change by taking substantial steps to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations and achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, with a long-term goal of reaching Net Zero by 2050. In 2024, the Group achieved a 25% reduction in its operational carbon footprint compared to 2022—more than double the original goal of a 10% cut for the year.

Out of a total operational footprint of 52,866 tCO2e in 2024, MAPFRE successfully offset 41,996 tCO2e, or 80%, through a diverse range of global environmental projects. These include reforestation, regenerative agriculture, avoided deforestation, improved forest management, and renewable energy initiatives—all selected based on the company’s Corporate GHG Compensation Strategy, which prioritizes nature-based solutions that promote biodiversity and benefit local communities.

A flagship initiative in MAPFRE’s compensation portfolio is the “Envira Amazonia” project in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest. Located along the Jurupari River, this project seeks to prevent deforestation in an area heavily degraded by historical rubber extraction. Countries including Germany, Spain, the U.S., Italy, Mexico, and Puerto Rico contributed to this effort, collectively offsetting 30,881 tons of carbon. The project also aims to boost local livelihoods through sustainable agricultural practices and forest preservation.

In Peru and Brazil, MAPFRE supported additional forest protection projects that offset 6,032 tons of carbon. These efforts focus on preventing logging, preserving the integrity of tropical forests, and supporting local farmers in transitioning to sustainable crop practices.

MAPFRE has also advanced regenerative agriculture projects in Spain, Italy, and Germany, helping farmers adopt practices that improve soil health, increase biodiversity, and lower GHG emissions. These projects collectively accounted for 2,139 tons of carbon offsets.

In Portugal, MAPFRE supported ecological restoration in Serra do Caramulo, offsetting 972 tons of carbon, while a wind energy project in Turkey offset another 622 tons. The remainder of MAPFRE’s offset efforts were allocated to improved forest management programs aimed at sustainable forestry and community benefits.

This broad portfolio of initiatives not only helps mitigate MAPFRE’s carbon impact but also contributes to biodiversity conservation and supports local communities. The Group continues to pursue a comprehensive sustainability strategy aligned with global climate goals, focusing on both operational reductions and meaningful offsets across its global footprint.
